Crawshaws is an old stone cottage of considerable character, dating in part from the 18th century, which has been recently restored. Sanded wooden floors, solid old furniture in keeping with the house and modern tiled-floor kitchen, all combine to make this traditional cottage a comfortable and cosy holiday house. It stands at the side of a quiet farm road amongst a tiny hamlet of houses, on a grassy hillside which slopes down to a stream and has a pretty outlook across to trees and some lovely walks round about.
It is about 40 miles south of Edinburgh, not far from the villages of Midlem and Lilliesleaf (2 pubs). Semi-detached from West Cottage it shares the same lovely countryside, and has a small grass garden in front (furniture) where one can sit out on a summer evening and revel in the peace and quiet.
Crawshaws is in the very heart of the romantic Border Country immortalised by Sir Walter Scott. Scott's own house of Abbotsford, outside Galasshiels (all facilities) is just a short drive away, with the lovely Eildon Hills, (one of several places which claim to be the final resting place of the legendary King Arthur), in the background. It is excellent country for walking, with the Southern Upland and St Cuthbert's Ways within easy reach and plenty of gentle strolls even closer to the cottage. Mountain bikers can take advantage of the dedicated forest trails at Glentress, fast becoming one of the country's finest mountain biking venues. There is riding near Earlston, and plenty of excellent golf courses in the area, so don't forget to bring your clubs! Fishermen will have the choice of several lochs or rivers in the area, including the mighty Tweed itself.
If a day at the beach appeals, then you can be on the Berwickshire coast in just over an hour, enjoying the sands at Coldingham or marvelling at the seabird colonies at St. Abb's Head. And there are plenty of historic houses, castles and keeps to visit as well.
Heating is by wood-burning stove and electrity. Bed linen and towels can be hired. Pets welcome.
