The Royal Burgh of Lauder is a pleasant Borders village which flanks the main A68 trunk road between the English border and Edinburgh. Quietly situated just off the road, towards the end of the village, is Lauderdale Cottage, a substantial, typically Scottish terraced house dating from 1780, which has now been transformed into a spacious holiday cottage.
Inside, it offers bright and comfortable accommodation, with a large sitting room and separate dining room, and upstairs, two double bedrooms (one en-suite) and two single bedrooms, making it ideal for extended families or parties of friends. Outside, there is a superb, long, rear garden, totally enclosed and secluded, with two grassed areas, and behind that a wooded section where children could run wild and have hours of fun with games of make-believe and adventure.
Grown-ups, on the other hand, will be pleased to find that the village is very well equipped with three pubs, two of which serve food, an hotel, a coffee shop and art gallery, and several other shops: these are all within a few minutes walk of the cottage. The challenging 9 hole golf-course, designed by Willie Park Jr in 1896, is just up the hill, and beautiful Thirlestane Castle, which is open to the public and hosts the South of Scotland Horse Trials in August, is at the other end of the village.
The cottage is perfectly situated for those wishing to spend time in Edinburgh (25m), and if you want to leave the car at home, buses run through the village every hour. To the south, east and west there are all the delights of the beautiful Border country, with its stately homes, and castles, ruined abbeys and pretty little towns. Walkers will find that Lauder is right on the Southern Upland Way; riding is available 8 miles away near Earlston; there is a swimming pool and cinema at Galashiels (10m).
Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED: the first £10 of electricity is INCLUDED. Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smokers.
