The Roro Estate is situated in Glen Lyon, the longest of the Scottish glens and arguably one of the loveliest, some 18 miles west of Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire.  A drive of about a mile on private Estate roads through moor and woodland will bring you to Balmenoch, a typical traditional Highland cottage, now beautifully refurbished internally and standing in its own large grass garden.  Its nearest neighbour is the Big House, over the wall and through the trees.  For families with children and pets, this is a perfect location, where both can run and play in safety.  The only things to look out for are the beautiful waterfall which tumbles down close to the cottage, a small lochan some distance away at the back, and the sheep which may be grazing round about, so some measure of control will be necessary for dogs.

From the door, there are lovely walks along the glen or on the surrounding hills.  If you go back to the 'main' road and continue west, you will come to the remote village of Bridge of Balgie (shop/PO), where you can turn left and continue down to Loch Tay.  There you will find lots of water sports, golf at Killin, and Kenmore, or you can climb Ben Lawers or visit the Iron Age crannog in the loch.  If you are at all interested in things historical, be sure not to miss the world-famous Fortingall yew in the churchyard at the village of that name (6m).  It is reputedly the oldest living thing in Europe, and was already 2,000 years old when Christ was a lad.  (Legend has it that Pontius Pilate  was born in Fortingall, the offspring of a Roman soldier father and a local girl!)

To the north, you can drive over the hill to Tummel and Loch Rannoch, where, amid more glorious scenery  Schiehallion, the Fairy Mountain, also awaits enthusiastic walkers.

Aberfeldy has shops, restaurants, hotels and a leisure centre.

Heating is by electricity and open fire.  Bed linen, towels and electricity are INCLUDED in the rental.  Well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement (kennel available).  Sorry, no smoking within the cottage
