If you are looking for something a bit different then Blackcraig Bridgehouse is just the place for you. This most unusual hideaway is actually part of a castle-like bridge that straddles the River Ardle, just 7 miles from Blairgowrie in Perthshire.

The bridge was built as part of the Blackcraig Castle estate back in the 1800s and as such was fashioned in a similarly grand style, complete with notched battlements. The adventure begins right as you arrive with a winding stone spiral staircase that leads you up a little turret and out into a charming courtyard area.
Inside much of the original flooring and wood-panelling has been retained throughout giving a warm, inviting feeling. There is a cosy kitchen/sitting room with a neat kitchen area and a handy dining area alongside. At the heart of the room is a multi-fuel stove with seating positioned around it, making the perfect spot to relax and listen to the river flowing by.
The double bedroom has a pretty decorative fireplace and plenty of storage and hanging space, as well as lovely views of the river. There is also a useful little study that has an original ‘privy’ which would once have been emptied directly into the river. Fortunately times have moved on and there is now a modern bathroom with a bath and shower over that completes the indoor accommodation.
Outside there is seating in the courtyard from which you can look out over the surrounding countryside and there is even a sauna with further beautiful river views. Parking is at the bottom of the stone staircase.
Please note: Unfortunately, due to the nature of the building, Blackcraig Bridgehouse is not suitable for children or people with limited mobility. Care should also be taken with pets - we recommend that dogs are kept on a lead once up in the bridge.
The countryside surrounding the house offers plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling and there is salmon and trout fishing available on the River Ardle.
Heading south, the nearest village is Bridge of Cally (3 miles) which has a grocery shop/PO and a pub. The picturesque town of Blairgowrie (9 miles) has a range of small independent shops, as well as supermarkets and various eateries. It also has an excellent 18-hole golf course that welcomes visitors.
The lively city of Perth (24 miles) has all the shops, museums, galleries, pubs and restaurants you could wish for. Just outside the city is Scone Palace (23 miles) that has a fascinating history you can learn about on a tour of the palace itself or there are 200 acres of beautiful open gardens and a star-shaped maze that just beg to be explored.
If a day at the seaside beckons then there are lovely sandy beaches at both Broughty Ferry (31 miles) and Carnoustie (40 miles). You can even head further up the coast to Arbroath (43 miles) and sample some of the famous ‘Arbroath Smokies’, a type of smoked haddock that is the town’s specialty.
Heading north from the house is the village of Kirkmichael (4.5 miles) that has a small shop and a PO/petrol station. The well known tourist draw of Pitlochry (17 miles) is just over half an hour’s drive away, with its famous festival theatre and fish ladder. There are also two different distilleries near the town, so you are well placed for picking up a ‘wee dram’ to take home with you.
It is definitely worth driving 15 minutes further out of Pitlochry to take in the ‘Queen’s View’, a viewpoint with an absolutely stunning, panoramic view out over Loch Tummel that is said to be one of the most photographed views in Scotland. A bit further north still is the Glenshee Ski Resort (22 miles) that offers skiing/snowboarding in the winter and walking/mountain biking in the summer months.

Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. The first £25 of electricity is INCLUDED with any additional usage payable by meter reading at the end of your stay. Heating is by electric night storage and panel heaters and multi-fuel stove (one basket of logs INCLUDED). WiFi is INCLUDED, subject to a fair usage policy. Water is from a private source which is UV Filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. A maximum of 1 small dog is welcome. No smoking.
Please note: Unfortunately, due to the nature of the building (the stone walls on the upper flat walkway are in places ONLY 80cm high), Blackcraig Bridgehouse is not suitable for children or people with limited mobility and care must be taken. Caution should also be taken with pets - we recommend that dogs are kept on a lead once up in the bridge.
