Inside, its sitting room is warm and inviting with a gas coal effect fire to curl up in front of and a dining area alongside. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need to cook with and the dishes are taken care of too, as there is a dishwasher. You are on holiday after all.
Upstairs are an attractive double bedroom, a light and bright twin bedroom and a neat bathroom with bath and shower over.
Outside the little ‘sitooterie’ by the back door is the ideal spot to sit and enjoy a relaxed breakfast with a path leading from the door right down to the river. A shed provides useful secure storage and the enclosed grassed garden has wonderful views out towards the Thomas Telford Bridge.
Parking is available in the adjoining road or in the pretty square nearby where the Atholl Memorial Fountain stands in memory of the 6th Duke of Atholl.
Dunkeld’s charming cathedral is just a stone’s throw away and just round the corner from the cottage is a café and a lovely gift shop where you can paint your own pottery and have it glazed and fired. The picturesque River Tay is just yards from the cottage with lovely walks along the banks and permits available for fishing.
There are scenic walks to be had within the Tay Forest Park at The Hermitage (1.5 miles), where waymarked paths lead along the River Braan to the fascinating Black Linn waterfall with plenty of wildlife to spot along the way (including red squirrels).
This area is ‘big tree country’ and there are certainly some fine specimens to be found. Across the river in Birnam stand the imposing Birnam Oak and neighbouring Birnam Sycamore that are believed to be the only survivors of the famous Birnam Wood featured in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Every year on the last Saturday of August Birnam hosts its annual Highland Games with visitors coming from all around to enjoy pipe music and dancing, as well as traditional games such as ‘tossing the caber’ and ‘putting the stone’. There is even a haggis eating competition!
Perth (14 miles), known as the ‘fair city’, is great for shopping with a wide range to choose from, as well as lots of different eateries with everything from ‘pub grub’ to fine dining on offer. If you don’t fancy driving, the train station at Birnam (1 mile) is in walking distance and from there it is an easy 25 minute train journey right into the heart of the city.
Perth has many interesting historical sites including Huntingtower Castle, a medieval castle that is fascinating to wander around and Elcho Castle, a very well-preserved 16th century tower house with views out over the River Tay. Just outside Perth is Scone Palace that is drenched in history as it is the place where many Scottish kings, including Robert the Bruce, were once crowned. The palace’s grounds extend to around 100 acres and they are particularly pretty in February/March when the woodland floor is carpeted in thousands of snowdrops.
