It stands in its own grass garden at the end of a quiet estate road, with only the Lodge itself in the vicinity. To the front, there are magnificent views of the surrounding hills - put on your boots and head straight out into this wonderful wilderness - while over the bank to the back there is a picturesque lochan. A waterfall tumbling down the glen within a few hundred yards of the cottage is probably all that will disturb the peace of this beautiful spot.
Inside, the cottage is simply but comfortably furnished and appointed, bright and cosy, with an open fire in the spacious living room. It is a splendid base for exploring the many attractions of this area, or just for relaxing.
While there is a very minor road out from Bridge of Balgie to Loch Tay, the Glen is more or less a cul de sac, which makes it unspoiled and relatively unfrequented. However, that certainly does not mean that there's nothing to do there!
There are water sports to be had on Loch Tay (15 miles) and Loch Earn (20 miles) or you could go white water rafting on the Tay. For walkers and climbers there are a number of Munros in the immediate area. Fishing for trout and salmon and stalking in season can also be arranged by the Estate. Look out for the rich variety of wildlife around you - buzzards, ptarmigan, grouse, deer and the elusive capercaillie, to name but a few.
Play golf at Pitlochry or Aberfeldy, or even Gleneagles itself. For evening entertainment, there is the 'Theatre in the Hills' at Pitlochry (35 miles), where the boast is that you can 'stay six days and see six plays'. Bridge of Balgie (4 miles) has a PO/tearoom.
The nearest hostelry is in the picturesque village of Fortingall (9 miles), with its thatched cottages and famous yew tree in the churchyard, said to be the oldest tree in Europe, which was already 3,000 years old when Christ was a boy. While on the subject, Fortingall is also reputed to be the birthplace (admittedly one of several) of Pontius Pilate, the result of his Roman soldier father's liaison with a local girl!
