Set in a courtyard setting in this quiet village it has an unusual layout with the main living accommodation on the first floor.
You enter on the ground floor where there is a handy utility room that has plenty of space for storing coats and boots and has a drying area for washing. There is also a modern and fully-tiled WC on this level.
Upstairs is the main open plan living area that has plenty of light flooding in from its dormer window. The seating area has comfortable, stylish corner seating that makes the most of the available space. The kitchen area is smart and modern with built-in appliances and plenty of storage and as the dining area is right alongside it means that the cook doesn’t have to miss out on all the fun.
A long hallway runs the length of the house with all the rooms off it. There are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, that are warm and attractively presented with splashes of Scottish charm. The double room has a king-size bed and the twin has a TV and games console that will keep children happy on rainy days. Finally the modern, fully-tiled family bathroom with a bath and shower over completes the accommodation.
Outside there is parking for one car right at the door in the courtyard and there is also a large communal garden (with furniture) that backs on to the wooded hill behind and is shared with Fortingall Stables.
Fortingall is a traditional village with old fashioned lamp posts and lovely thatched cottages. The village hotel just round the corner from the house serves bar meals and sometimes has live music in the evenings.
The famous Fortingall Yew tree, that is said to be over 5,000 years old, stands just yards away in the little churchyard. There are mountain biking trails going straight from the village and you can fish for salmon on the River Lyon (permits are available from the hotel).
Kenmore (8 miles) has a little sand and shingle beach on the shore of Loch Tay and there are a couple of restaurants and a little village shop for basic provisions. The village’s main visitor attraction is the Scottish Crannog Centre that features a full-size reconstructed crannog (loch dwelling) and shows what life would have been like back in the Iron Age. Various watersports are available on the loch including canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and even paddle boarding. You can also hire a boat if you fancy going out for the day to explore the loch further.
Aberfeldy (9 miles) is the place for supermarket shopping and there are also various cafes, bars and restaurants. For a bit of adventure Highland Safari offers walking, cycling, forest and mountain safaris. You can even try your hand at off-road driving or have a go at panning for gold and precious stones. Dewar’s World of Whisky is definitely worth a visit for a self-guided tour and, of course, to sample a ‘wee dram’.
There are plenty of walking routes for different abilities in the area and you are ideally placed for doing some ‘munro bagging’. You can even tackle the imposing Ben Lawers (11 miles), the 10th highest munro in Scotland, that stands at nearly 4,000 feet and is known for its unusual alpine flora and fauna.
Pitlochry (23 miles) is another popular tourist spot with its famous dam and 86 metre high fish ladder that allows the Atlantic salmon to pass through the dam. Every September the town holds Highland Games with pipe music, dancing and traditional games such as ‘tug of war’ and ‘tossing the caber’.

There was a bit of a drain smell when we arrived, presumably because the cottage has a septic tank - otherwise fine.
The only thing we were disappointed with was the difficult access to the garden. It was not great having to go through ...Read More
