Fewer visitors, however, take the quiet secondary road along the north bank of the Tay between Strathtay and Weem and it is on this road, in a wonderful position high above the river, that you will find Tombuie Schoolhouse.
In its sylvan setting, the schoolhouse really is a rather fairytale ‘cottage in the wood’ that is large but with a decidedly cottagey feel to it. Inside, you can tell at once that the house is a much-loved family home that is full of character, furnished in a traditional style which perfectly complements its ambience. The long, bright sitting room has several large windows that let the light flood in. There is plenty of comfortable seating at one end round the cosy open fire, affording lots of space for guests to spread out and enjoy different pursuits.
The very spacious kitchen diner is everything a traditional farmhouse kitchen should be, with its electric cooker, enormous pine dresser and table that is large enough to accommodate everyone. There is a separate utility/laundry room, while the adjoining porch conservatory is very handy for storing boots, outdoor clothing and sporting equipment, as well as providing sleeping accommodation for a pet.
There is also a handy downstairs bedroom (with twin beds that can be pushed together) with an en suite bathroom with small bath and an additional shower room.
Upstairs there are three further bedrooms, a twin and two singles. The bedrooms are all very comfortable and furnished with classic pieces. A family bathroom completes the accommodation. The house is not only welcoming but also very versatile and suited to different party configurations.
Outside, the house stands in its own extensive woodland garden with ample parking at the door. There is an ancient fairy knoll in the front garden, at the top of which is a seat which has a magnificent view of the river below and all the lovely countryside around - perfect for sitting and dreaming on a warm afternoon.
Given the peace and beauty of the immediate surroundings, tenants may not wish to stray very far. Those who do, however, will find themselves spoilt for choice of activities and destinations.
Pitlochry, with its famous Festival Theatre, is in one direction, just 15 miles away. It is on the A9, which leads swiftly to the Cairngorms, Aviemore and beyond. The house is also only just over an hour's drive from the Glenshee Ski Resort where you can try skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking. In the other direction is Loch Tay, which has plenty of opportunities for watersports.
Visitors to the pretty village of Kenmore at the head of the loch can visit the reconstructed Iron Age crannog there, where a number of hands-on activities will amuse adults and children alike. You can head over the hill to Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch, maybe taking in the ascent of Schiehallion on the way.
Aberfeldy has good shops, eating places, a golf course and a leisure centre. The stretch of the Tay at Grandtully (pronounced Grantly) is a recognised venue for white-water kayaking and rafting and riding and fishing are also available locally.
Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
