Aberfeldy, near the head of Loch Tay in the very heart of Highland Perthshire and indeed of Scotland, has long been a favoured tourist destination.  Fewer visitors, however, take the quiet secondary road along the north bank of the Tay between Strathtay and Weem, and it is on this road, in a wonderful position high above the river, that you will find Tombuie Schoolhouse.

It is a handsome house, large, but with a decidedly cottagy feel, standing in its own extensive woodland garden, with ample parking at the door.  There is an ancient fairy knoll in the front garden, at the top of which is a seat which affords a magnificent view of the bend in the river below and all the lovely countryside roundabout - perfect for sitting and dreaming on a warm afternoon.

Inside, you can tell at once that the house is a much-loved family home, furnished in a traditional style which perfectly complements its ambience.  There is a large, bright sitting room with open fire, a very spacious kitchen-diner, which has both a Rayburn and an electric cooker, with a small porch/conservatory beyond.  A utility room, shower room and twin bedroom (can be put together) with an en suite bathroom with small bath complete the downstairs accommodation.  Upstairs are two single bedrooms and a further twin bedroom.  The house is therefore not only comfortable but also very versatile and suited to different party configurations.

Given the peace and beauty of the immediate surroundings, tenants may not wish to stray very far.  Those who do, however, will find  themselves spoiled for choice of activities and destinations.  Pitlochry, with its famous Festival Theatre, is in one direction, just 15 miles away.  It is on the A9, which leads swiftly to the Cairngorms, Aviemore and beyond.  In the other direction  is Loch Tay, with opportunities for water sports.  Visitors to the pretty village of Kenmore at the head of the loch can visit the reconstructed Iron Age crannog there, where a number of hands-on activities will amuse adults and children alike.

Or head over the hill to Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch, maybe taking in the ascent of Schiehallion on the way.

Aberfeldy has good shops, eating places, golf course and a leisure centre.  The stretch of the Tay at Grandtully (pronounced Grantly) is a recognised venue for white-water kayaking and rafting.  Riding and fishing are also available locally.

Bed linen, towels, oil central heating (first £30) and electricity are INCLUDED  One well-behaved pet is welcome but must sleep in the porch.  Smoking is not permitted within the house.  Water is from a private source.  There is a telephone in the house.

We would like to say a big thank you for our recent and most enjoyable holiday at Tombuie Schoolhouse. Everything was as described and more. The weather was picture postcard. The house is a credit to the owners in keeping the character and the warmth this property offers, we will certainly recommend this property to our friends and family.
