Whiteburn Cottage is a traditional, detached, timber-clad and beautifully maintained stone farm cottage for which the words 'cosy' and 'neat' might have been coined, and it is no surprise that many of its visitors choose to go back there year after year! Well-appointed and very comfortably furnished, with a light airy sitting-room and a kitchen with breakfast-bar which overlooks the enclosed garden (furniture), it stands on its own in the rich farming country of Scotland's south-east corner some 20 miles north of Berwick-on-Tweed and 11 miles south of Dunbar. At the side of a tarmac farm road (easily accessible from the A1) it has a peaceful setting in a vast green countryside which has sweeping views of the distant Lammermuir Hills. This is wonderful walking country - the Southern Upland Way passes within a few yards of the cottage. At the same time it is not far from from the excellent sandy beach of Coldingham, the RSPB sanctuary at St. Abbs Head, which is a must for nature-lovers, and the romantic ruin of Fast Castle on its dramatic perch above the sea.
On the farm nearby there is 4x4 and quad bike hire (with tuition) for adults and children over 6. There is a restaurant at Abbey St. Bathans (2½ miles), a pub at Grantshouse (5 miles), shops, hotels, a swimming pool and tennis courts in the pretty market town of Duns (9 miles), and all the attractions of Edinburgh within one hour's drive. Around Dunbar there are several excellent golf-courses. Berwick upon Tweed - much fought over by England and Scotland throughout the Middle Ages - is well worth a visit and there are many stately homes of which the nearest are the elegant Paxton House and Ayton Castle.
Heating is by gas-CH, electricity (INCLUDED) and open-fire. Bed linen is INCLUDED and towels are available for hire. Pets are welcome by arrangement.
