The Wedding House is a charming, peaceful, fisherman’s cottage just 20 metres from a beautiful sandy beach, in the conservation village of Sandend on the picturesque Moray coast.

Rumour has it that the house was named after the fact that local brides used the unexpectedly spacious bedrooms to dress in as it was one of the few houses in the village that they could stand upright in and see themselves in all their finery.

Recently renovated to a very high standard throughout, the owner has combined original fittings with vintage furniture and original art to celebrate the natural age of the building. The neat sitting room has a lovely decorative fireplace and the cosy kitchen is well-equipped with everything required to cook up a storm. It is a great place to gather for evening meals or just to sit and relax by the multi-fuel stove.

Upstairs the neat bathroom has a view out to sea and there are two attractive bedrooms, a double and a twin.

Outside there is parking just along the road from the house and it is just a minutes’ walk to the harbour and a short stroll on to the beach where you can try fishing right off the rocks, or perhaps venture out on the water for some canoeing, kayaking or surfing. The Wedding House is an ideal getaway for recharging the batteries and having fun!

Map & Local

Amazing fresh seafood is available from the boats in the village each day and there are some really pretty coastal paths nearby that are ideal for walking or cycling whilst keeping an eye out for dolphins and seals. For more serious walkers, the Speyside Way starts at Buckie (10.5 miles).

Sandend is just one of the many old fishing villages that lie along this stretch of coastline. Portsoy (3 miles) is known for its pretty harbour and annual boat festival and is also home to The Salmon Bothy, a small museum detailing local history particularly surrounding the salmon fishing industry. This is golf country and there are several golf courses dotted around that allow players to make the most of the weather - after all, this area enjoys some of the most hours of sunshine and least amounts of rainfall in Scotland.

Tours and tastings are available at the Glenglassaugh Distillery near Portsoy and the Glenfiddich Distillery (26 miles) and Aberlour Distillery (30 miles) are also nearby if you are on the whisky trail.

There are plenty of shops, pubs and eateries in Banff (10 miles) and at neighbouring Macduff children are sure to love the Marine Aquarium with viewing windows that showcase its fascinating sealife. Widlife boat trips run out from either Banff or Macduff from which you may see dolphins, seals and minke whales, as well as a whole host of seabirds.

Heading east along the coast, there is another long sandy beach at Cullen (4 miles) and an 18 hole links golf course set right alongside with wonderful coastal vistas to enjoy as you play. Carry on to Fort George (56 miles) to take in the very impressive fortress there that was built back in the 1700s and has stayed remarkably true to its original design. The interesting Highlanders’ Museum is set within the site and you can walk around the mighty ramparts to really get a sense of the enormity of the place. Fort George’s location just opposite Chanonry Point means that it has become known as a great place to spot dolphins out in the narrows.

If some serious shopping beckons then a day trip into Inverness is just the ticket. The city is accessible in under 2 hours’ drive or you can jump on the train at Keith (16 miles) and be there in about an hour.
