Lonach and Forbestown Lodges are two excellent and identical larch lodges situated in an attractive woodland setting above a small pond in the heart of rural Donside, some 18 miles from Ballater and 16 from Tomintoul.

Inside they are well-equipped,  spacious and comfortable, with an open plan living area, where patio doors open on to a decking area above the water.  With two bedrooms and a bed settee in the sitting area, they can each accommodate up to six people.

Strathdon, between the Grampians and the Ladder Hills is a spectacular glen which offers many opportunities for those of an active disposition.  There are walks of all grades of difficulty, from low-level woodland strolls to some of the most challenging hill walks in the country.  Mountain biking enthusiasts will enjoy the many tracks which run deep into the hills, and in winter the Lecht ski-ing area is right on the doorstep.

The Don is an excellent fishing river, well known for its brown trout.  Those interested in wildlife will find this in rich abundance, with eagles, buzzards, osprey, deer, pine martens, red squirrels all likely to be on the viewing list.  You will find plenty details and information in the lodges.

For the less energetic, the area offers castles, stately homes, and galleries.  Craigievar, Leith Hall and Crathes are all worth a visit, as is  Braemar/Balmoral.  In the other directions you well within driving distance of Grantown on Spey, Loch Ness and Inverness itself.

Heating is by electricity (INCLUDED). Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED.  One well-behaved pet per lodge is welcome.  Sorry, no smoking within the lodges.  Water is from a private supply.  Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.

The lodges are very spacious and extremely comfortable to live in. Thank you Jack and Cath for lending us sledges. Lots to do with Lecht Ski Centre and lots of walks nearby and Aviemore is only around an hour's drive with lots to do over there too.

What a wonderfully restful place- soon felt re-charged, despite our long journey by sleeper train. Boys would have loved snow-maybe next time! The beautiful Christmas tree you provided made things extra special-home from home. Hope to return some day PS Thank you for being so flexible with our arrival and departure times-much appreciated! (oh, and the bottle of wine!!)

Overall a very good week. Weather at the start of the week exceptionally warm and enjoyed sitting out on the terrace; dipped mid week with below average temperatures with cloud/rain but ended on a high with high pressure re-established and a warm day. A good location, several good walks including Lochnagar today. Literature in the lodge appreciated. National Trust properties nearby and of course Balmoral. All in all an excellent week in a well appointed lodge. P.S. Thanks for the welcome wine and flowers-appreciated.
