Milton Steading has a peaceful situation in the heart of Speyside.  Set within the Cairngorms National Park, it lies 13 miles from Grantown on Spey and just 6 from Tomintoul.  It was converted by the owners from an old stone farm building into a spacious and very practical family home for their own use.  Lucky holiday makers, however, are now also being offered the chance to enjoy it as an excellent base from which to explore this hugely scenic area.

It stands on a very quiet unclassified country road beside the River Avon, in its own grass garden.  Inside, there is a huge and well-equipped dining kitchen, a comfortable sitting room with multi-fuel stove (and pool table!), three downstairs bedrooms, one with en suite shower and a further bathroom.  The bedrooms also have doors to the garden.  Upstairs there is a gallery/additional seating or play area and another bedroom with en suite shower. There is also a utility/drying room, whilst outside there is a lockable shed which can be used for storing bikes or fishing equipment.  Two additional z beds can be made available for children (extra charge).

With over one hundred miles of waymarked trails on the Glenlivet estate (including part of the Speyside Way) and the Cairngorms and the Cromdales on the doorstep, the area offers splendid walking.  The Spey is also known as one of Scotland's premier fishing rivers, though there are plenty of other less illustrious (and expensive!) but just as enjoyable waters to fish in the immediate area.  The Lecht Ski area is just 13 miles away, while Cairngorm Mountain is 34 miles away.

Speyside's other claim to fame is, of course, its whisky, and fans of the 'water of life' will be delighted to know that the Glenlivet distillery is just 7 miles from the cottage.  You can join the Whisky Trail there and taste and compare from the numerous distilleries in the surrounding area. (Perhaps best take a non-drinking driver along!)

Railway buffs will enjoy the Speyside steam railway which runs from Boat of Garten, or the heritage railway at Dufftown, while those with an interest in wildlife will find they are quite spoiled for choice with the Rothiemurchus Forest, the Glen More Forest Park and the osprey centre at Boat of Garten all close by.  That's if the many wildlife-watching opportunities in the immediate area aren't enough - from red deer to mountain hare to black grouse.  You can hear more about these and many other animals on local ranger-guided walks or wildlife Landrover tours.

A visit to Inverness, Royal Deeside, or a day on the sunny Moray Coast are other easily accessible destinations.

The first £20 of oil CH, electricity, and bed linen are all INCLUDED in the rental and towels may be hired.  Up to three well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.  Sorry, no smoking within the cottage.  Water is from a private borehole providing a plentiful supply.  Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.

Compson Party, Newcastle 13/02/2010

After a long journey from Newcastle what a gorgeous destination! Really spacious for all 8 of us (plus the dog). Loved the pool table, open fire, sofa that fitted us all, fully stocked kitchen (we even had an afternoon of baking), toasty warm floor. The bedrooms were beautifully decorated - great how they opened up on to the garden. All in all, the best cottage we have stayed in and we would love to return. Thanks.

You have a wonderful home and have thought of everything. Fantastic setting. Neither of us want to leave. The neighbours are lovely and we have enjoyed taking Milly for walks. We hope to return. Many thanks.

A beautiful house with everything. We all had a really good time and now we would like to come in the summer.

Webb Party, Lancashire 03/07/2010

Full of admiration for the work put in to producing such a wonderful home. One of the best in 40 years of visits to Scotland. The grand-parent floor was ideal!

Hardman family plus partners and pugs, Cheshire/Nottingham/Cardiff/France 17/07/2010

As our family is now scattered about quite a bit we have a family get together holiday every year at this time. This house is by far the best we have stayed at and gave us the necessary space that eight people plus dogs need. As well as being extremely comfortable we've had a wonderful time walking and exploring this very beautiful part of Scotland and hope to return soon.

Coventry Party, Suffolk 24/07/2010

The house is every bit as good as its photos on the web! A real treat to stay here. Not nearly enough time to do everything we wanted to. Ballindalloch Castle is just stunning. We have also been lucky with the weather. We will definitely be back.

Wale Party, Bedford-shire 31/07/2010

Thoroughly enjoyed staying here - can't wait to come back. Absolutely gorgeous house. You have thought of everything imaginable. The fire made for perfect evenings after a long soak in an amazing bath! Loved all the blankets and hot water bottles (not that they were needed!) Bedrooms are to die for. Best house - love it! A very big thank you. Strongly recommend the 'clock house' in Tomintoul - best food by far! Definitely worth a visit!

Vince, Sue, Cara and Kieran & The Dogs, Stoke-on-Trent 07/08/2010

'Perfect'. The house has everything we needed for our holiday. It's amazing what can be done with an old cow barn, the photographs detail a wonderful creation - well done and thank you for letting us share your house for our week here. The wildlife is great. Saw the stoats, deer, sparrow hawks, rabbits, rabbits, and more rabbits. Dogs have been walked for miles and miles, then some more - good fun practicing the casting on the Lochy as well. All in all an excellent week in a perfect house. Many thanks.

Robinson party, Roxburghshire 30/07/2011

Fantastic house, very well equipped, extremely comfortable and beautiful location. Really could not have asked for more. The house exceeded all expectations. All very sad to leave at the end of the week.

Elsey party, West Sussex 15/01/2011

Our second visit and it has been as wonderful as our first. It's an amazing home and location. We don't want to leave. We've watched many birds, rabbits and a stoat in the field opposite. Many thanks.

Allenby party, North Yorkshire 06/08/2011

Wow! What a cottage! Finally we have found a cottage where 3 couples can comfortably stay and cook! Lovely comfy beds, large sofa, big kitchen, lots of big pans and a pool table to entertain the children! (sorry, men!!) We have all had a fantastic week and would recommend this amazing cottage to anyone, thank you!!

Dunn Party, Warwickshire 27/08/2011

Wow!! What a fantastic house and spectacular location - we cannot wait to come back next year!!! The house surpassed our expectations. Beds were really comfortable, children loved the hot water bottles (which we needed!) The log burner got plenty of use too! The kitchen was really well equipped - better than any other holiday home we've stayed in before. The area is fantastic and the people so friendly - we particularly enjoyed Ballindalloch Castle, The Whisky Castle in Tomintoul, the Tree-Top Zone in Rothiemurchus (Great for the kids!) and the nearby lochs.... all in all a great holiday! House was superb, location was fantastic, lovely relaxing break. Clean and well equipped.

Mackay party, Fife 24/09/2011

The conversion of Milton steading is a credit to the Harpers. We have enjoyed a great week and the weather was remarkably kind. Whilst remote, there are lots of things for families to do within a short drive. Already considering a return visit, which is always a sign of a good holiday.

Brown party, Clackmannanshire 08/10/2011

We have had a great week, lovely weather, sunshine every day!! So Scotland can have the best of British weather some of the time!! The walking trails on estate varied and very enjoyable. Tomintoul to Glenlivet via Strathspey Spur superb finishing with tea, cakes and a free tour of Distillery. Some of our party cycled off road enjoyed wildlife and routes into the Cairngorms. House ideal for our needs. Love to return.

Thorley family, Aberdeenshire 15/10/2011
