Loch Ness is surely one of the most famous of Scotland's many attractions and just over the hill from Foyers on the 'quiet' side of this magnificent stretch of water, situated by the smaller Loch Mhor, is Lochgarthside Cottage.

Half way between Inverness and Fort Augustus, it stands on a single-track road, with views through the trees to the loch and mountains beyond. It is a traditional stone croft house which dates from the late 1800s and which has been lovingly restored from a ruined state some twenty years ago.
There is a good-sized garden behind the house giving access to a field and across the road you also have access through the fields to the loch. A large porch at the back of the house provides space for muddy boots, coats and dogs and also houses the cottage's original covered well.
The interior now offers holiday accommodation which is both comfortable and full of character, the living room extending the full length of the original cottage with a wood-burning stove to supplement the oil central heating and at which you can toast your toes after a day on the hills or the water.
The spacious, well-equipped dining kitchen has an oil-fired Esse which fires the heating and water in conjunction with the stove. There is an additional electric cooker and a small single bedroom completes the downstairs accommodation. Upstairs are double and twin bedrooms, each with their own facilities (shower in each and a bath in one).
The cottage makes a splendid base for exploring this popular area, allowing you to return at night to a peaceful retreat, far from the tourist crowds. From here, walkers can stride out into the Monadhliath Mountains, with the chance to see red deer and mountain hares while along the many forest tracks and rides you may see red squirrels and pine martens.
Stratherrick, once known as the 'Little Lake District' has many small lochs and lochans and offers wonderful bird watching and quiet roads for cycling. There are a number of small craft shops and galleries to visit.
Lochgarthside is also a prime location for exploring the central Highlands. Within an hour you can visit Strathspey, with its famous ospreys, whisky distilleries and the ancient Caledonian forest. Glen Affric, Torridon and the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve are all within reach and, in the west, Skye, Fort William, Mallaig and the silver sands of Morar all provide exciting days out.
Closer at hand is the haunting battlefield of Culloden and Fort George out on the point where you can keep an eye out for the pods of dolphins swimming through the narrows. The Black Isle has pretty villages and historical interest. Inverness, at the head of Loch Ness, is a vibrant city offering every sort of entertainment, fine dining and excellent shopping.
At the southern end of Loch Ness, picturesque Fort Augustus is certainly worth a visit. You can sit on the banks of the Caledonian Canal in the middle of the village, watching the boats pass through the locks on their way to Loch Oich, Loch Lochy and the sea.
