Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire
Nestled at the southern most end of the legendary Loch Ness, with the Caledonian Canal flowing through its centre, is the pretty highland village of Fort Augustus.
Situated not far from its heart, in a quiet cul de sac, in its own private garden is Fettercairn Cottage. This newly built, detached property has been specifically configured to provide a holiday home which is both practical and stylish.
Fettercairn Cottage's design and location and the fact that it has all modern conveniences make it the ideal base for guests, even those of more limited mobility, to discover the charms of the Great Glen.
Efficient oil-fired central heating will keep you warm even on a winter wonderland break. The large sitting room is warm and inviting with stylish, comfortable seating around the wood-burning stove with its feature flue. The modern kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of room for cooking and has a dining area that draws family and friends in to discuss the day's adventures over dinner. There is also a handy utility room where there are laundry facilities.
All on one level there are three excellent bedrooms, two doubles and a twin, that are all spacious and most pleasingly furnished and decorated. One of the doubles has a king-size bed and an en suite shower room and there is also an additional family bathroom.
Outside there is a gravelled parking area with a ramp up to the front door and a lockable garage that provides secure storage for your bikes and day trip equipment. To the rear of the cottage is a large grassed garden with a patio area (with furniture) where you can eat al fresco in the evening sun. Fettercairn is the perfect place to rest and relax after a busy day enjoying the surrounding area.
Fort Augustus is just over 30 miles from the region's 'capital' of Inverness (with all facilities and airport) and the same distance from Fort William (with all facilities) at the base of the mighty Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak.
Although it is only small, Fort Augustus has the advantage of at least four eateries within walking distance of the cottage. Suitably refreshed, you can take a look at the other attractions - the Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre and the Rare Breeds Croft, for example.
Loch Ness viewpoint provides sweeping views across the mysterious waters of the legendary loch and, for those who fancy a more hands-on approach, cruises leave from the village every hour. Fort Augustus actually guarantees you a sighting of the famed Loch Ness Monster, as her sculpture stands just over the lock from the village Post Office!
Not far from the loch side is Fort Augustus Abbey, a former Benedictine retreat and school built in 1876 using some of the remnants of the fort after which the settlement was named. The monks left in 1998 and it has now been converted into flats.
With the ease and cosiness Fettercairn Cottage affords and so much to do close by, it would be understandable if you chose not to venture too far, however if you do choose to explore further afield you will find the possibilities of the area are almost limitless. There is the picturesque Castle Urquhart further up the loch, the magnificent coast of the Moray Firth is close enough for a visit and the Cairngorm National Park awaits you to the east. All this and breathtaking highland scenery as far as you can see - what more could you ask for?
