Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, has a splendid position at the junction of the River Ness and the Moray Firth, with excellent rail and air services and road connections in all directions - to the north-west coast, Torridon and Skye, to the north, Thurso and John o' Groats, to the south, legendary Loch Ness and the glorious Glens Affic and Cannich, and to the east, the beaches and picturesque fishing villages of the sunny Moray Coast.
Inverness itself buzzes with cosmopolitan life, with excellent restaurants, shops, and places of entertainment, and your stay in this vibrant and exciting town will be perfected by your accommodation in the luxurious surroundings of Heraghty Lodge. This supremely comfortable and high spec. apartment, on the ground floor at the front and the first floor at the back, has a wonderful position right on the banks of the river. You can breakfast on its balcony terrace (furniture) or sit with an evening drink, watching the fishermen and looking out on to the wooded parklands on the far bank. Inside, there is a sumptuous living area, a beautifully appointed kitchen, two bedrooms, one en suite, an additional bathroom and a hexagonal 'tower room' which can be used as a reading room, river observatory or a most restful quiet room.
From the apartment it is possible to walk into the city almost without encountering a main road, or you can wander along the footbridges which connect the Ness islands in the river. Across one of these you will find the Aquadome Leisure Centre, which also has boating ponds, and a miniature railway. The refurbished Eden Court Theatre is also set to become one of the most important cultural venues in Scotland.
You can fish from the bank outside the apartments and day permits on the Ness can be arranged. Golfers will find many excellent courses to test their mettle, and wild life watchers will think they are in heaven. Bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen just across the Kessock Bridge; in the surrounding glens you can spot buzzards and golden eagles, grouse, deer, and even elusive pine martens. The beautiful Black Isle, just north of the town, is the site of a major re-introduction of red kites into Scotland. It's a rare day that you do not spot one or two as you approach the Tore roundabout on your way to Ullapool, Dornoch or Thurso. In five minutes, too, you can be on the shores of Loch Ness itself.
Just outside the town, no one with even a passing interest in history should miss the haunting battlefield at Culloden, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's dreams of a Stuart restoration were finally destroyed. Fort George, one of the military fortresses then built by the Hanoverians to ensure the Highlands remained subdued, is another worthwhile destination as is a visit to Cawdor Castle, made famous by its association with Macbeth, the Thane of Cawdor.
To the south, the Cairngorm Mountains, with all the possibilities they offer for ski-ing, walking and climbing, are easily accessible.

There is a ramp to the entrance door and parking for two to three vehicles. Bed linen, towels, heating by gas CH and £10 of electricity are all INCLUDED. Sorry, no pets, or smoking within the house. Because of its balcony and riverside situation, Heraghty Lodge is not really suitable for young children. A refundable householder's deposit will be required.
