The little village of Rogart lies between Dornoch and Lairg in Sutherland, and is therefore superbly placed for exploring both the North Sea and north-west coasts and all the wonderful Highland scenery in between.
We are now delighted to have Burnside Cottage, just three miles from Rogart, back on our books. Burnside may be familiar to old Unique Cottages hands from way back, but its former guests might be hard put to recognise their old haunt now, for it has been the subject of total refurbishment and substantial upgrading.
It has now been refurnished with considerable style. The sitting room has a wood burner, there is a newly fitting dining kitchen and a double bedroom and bathroom and upstairs are two twins, one with fairly steeply coombed ceilings and a single bedroom also with coombed ceiling.
Burnside, which is semi-detached from Jock's Cottage, has a pleasant secluded and hedged garden to the front (furniture) with lovely views over the surrounding countryside and hills. It is accessed by a short track, so is in a very peaceful setting with parking in front of the house. You can walk straight out on to the hill behind, and the River Lettie flows past at the side (care required with children). The Lettie and the nearby River Fleet offer trout and salmon fishing which can be organised by the owners.
There is a train halt, shop and hotel at Rogart, and supermarket shopping at Tain (21m) and Golspie (11m, swimming pool). You can also visit distilleries at Brora and Tain and the Glenmorangie distillery is just over the causeway at the Dornoch Firth. Near Golspie too is turreted Dunrobin Castle, a must-see, which hosts numerous events for visitors throughout the year and regular displays of falconry.
In the other direction the Falls of Shin between Bonar Bridge and Lairg, are another popular tourist attraction and you can continue along Loch Shin to Laxford Bridge and Scourie on the north-west coast.
It goes without saying that there is splendid walking in the area, and mountain biking trails near Brora. A trip to the north coast through the famous Flow Country is another highly recommended excursion. With an early start, you could even have a day on Orkney!
The cathedral 'city' of Dornoch offers glorious beaches, and a championship golf course, as well as some great places to eat. You certainly will not be short of things to do at Burnside Cottage, and have a most comfortable haven where you can return at the end of your busy days.
Bed linen, towels, electricity and the first £15 of oil-CH are INCLUDED. Two dogs are welcome by arrangement but more may be accepted by special request only. Smoking is not permitted in the cottage. There is a shared laundry with Jock's Cottage. Wi-fi is available subject to provider
