The Abbey St Bathans Estate is a large private country Estate serenely tucked away between The Lammermuir Hills and the Berwickshire Coast some 20 miles north of Berwick-on-Tweed and 4 miles from the A1 road at Grantshouse.
Scenically like a little bit of The Highlands in The Lowlands there are glens with native woodlands laced with quiet footpaths which tenants can wander at will and the River Whiteadder offers private salmon and trout fishing (permits available by prior arrangement) as it meanders past the house or rushes through the glen. There is also a pond in the immediate vicinity - very picturesque, but some care may be required with young children.
There is horse-riding, bird-watching and scuba-diving at famous St Abb's Head, golf on many courses; an Adventure Driving School and a fine sandy beach at Coldingham Bay nearby - plus an excellent small restaurant for both snacks and meals.
Edinburgh is just over one hour's drive and with all of the Scottish Border Country, plus Northumberland's National Park, Coast and castles within easy radius, there is almost too great a choice of places to visit!
The Retreat has been completely refurbished within its old stone walls. It is an elegant home affording maximum comfort and a charming ambience, and it faces across a courtyard to the grassy banks of the River Whiteadder and the trees beyond - semi-detached (at right-angles) from a stone building which houses a games room (table-tennis/football/darts).
Heating is by oil-fired central heating (£15 INCLUDED), electricity (INCLUDED) and open fire (logs INCLUDED). Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement, but should be kept under supervision in and around the house. There is a payphone. So sorry, smoking is not permitted within the property.
