Braehead Cottage is a traditional shepherd's cottage which stands quite alone among the Border hills, just off the A7 Carlisle to Edinburgh road, 10 miles north of Langholm and about 11 miles south of Hawick.

With a stand of trees behind and lovely views across, up and down the valley on its other three sides, it is an ideal spot for a relaxing family holiday.
Traditional though its external appearance may be, inside it has received a complete makeover from its proud owners and is as smart and comfortable as can be, with every modern convenience. The cottage is kept snug and warm by double glazing, oil central heating and a wood-burning stove.
The welcoming owners have tried to think of everything that would make your stay a pleasant one. Great care has gone into furnishing the cottage, from the bright sitting room with its wood-burning stove and views across the valley, to the kitchen which is very well-equipped. The dining area is out of the way at one end and there is a door to the rear which provides a useful alternative to the front door if you are coming in off the hill with muddy boots.
The double bedroom, with its elegant brass-knobbed bedstead, also faces the front so you can wake up to the sunshine and views, while the two twin bedrooms are also very well furnished and have plenty of space. The family bathroom is both modern and elegant, again with a stylish décor and polished wood flooring.
As far as activities are concerned walkers can head off into the hills directly from the house, right over to romantic Hermitage Castle if you wish, and there are also excellent forest walks with picnic spots at Old Northhouse. Fishing is available nearby and permits are available through the Hawick Angling Club.
If you want to bring your bikes, there is secure storage at the cottage, with the nearest dedicated trails being at Craik Forest near Hawick (11 miles). Riding is available 17 miles away at Dryden on the way to Selkirk (23 miles). There is also sailing and wind surfing at lovely St Mary's Loch (24 miles).
The nearest shops are in Hawick which also has a leisure centre. The cottage has the rare advantage too that it is on a bus route, with the Carlisle Raillink bus passing the end of the drive.
At Braehead, you are right in the middle of the country, giving fantastic opportunities for exploring in all directions. Kielder Water, with all its potential for sporting activities (including watersports) is about an hour's drive away. You can be in Carlisle or Gretna or on the Solway Coast in an hour, while the east coast and, in the other direction, the Lake District, can be reached in about an hour and a half. The capital of Edinburgh with all its attractions is also easily reachable in an hour and a half's drive, or 50 minutes by train from Galashiels (29 miles).

Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Electricity is INCLUDED. Heating is by oil central heating (INCLUDED) and wood-burning stove. Wifi is INCLUDED (subject to a fair usage policy). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. A maximum of 2 dogs are welcome at an additional charge (1 large, 2 medium or 2 small).
