Situated on a quiet back road 6 miles south of Peebles, looking across the Tweed valley to the hills beyond, this historic cottage is reckoned to have been the original ford-keeper's cottage in the olden days when cattle were driven across the River Tweed to market at Peebles and Edinburgh.
The interior of the cottage has been substantially upgraded and now has energy efficient electric central heating to supplement the wood-burning stove which provides a warm welcome in the comfortably furnished sitting room.
The kitchen too has been thoroughly modernised and provides plenty of room both to cook and to dine. The downstairs twin bedroom is also very spacious and, with the bathroom nearby, is very handy for those of more limited mobility.
Upstairs are a double bedroom and a single room which, with its coombed ceiling, wood panelling, exposed stone end wall and Velux window, is a most attractive retreat.
With all ‘mod cons’, including internet and satellite television, White Cottage combines traditional character with practicality and comfort.
The cottage is ideally placed for a variety of outdoor pursuits. The River Tweed, located just 100 yards from the cottage, is internationally famed for its salmon and sea trout fishing (fishing permits are available locally).
The area is particularly well-known for mountain biking; the dedicated forest trails at Glentress and the downhill trail at Innerleithen, well-known to enthusiasts, are both within a couple of miles of the house. There is also riding at Peebles Hydro (5 miles).
Backing onto the Cardrona Forest, the cottage provides many opportunities for long and short forest walks. The Southern Upland Way, a long distance footpath which passes through the village of Traquair, is only a short distance away.
The Cardrona Country Club Hotel with its championship golf course, luxury spa and health club, is less than half a mile away and welcomes visitors.
This comfortable and spacious cottage, set amidst the peaceful Scottish Borders countryside, with its excellent walks, scenery, historic towns and villages, has several abbeys, museums, historic houses and gardens within easy driving distance. It is easy to forget that you're just 40 minutes' drive outside of Edinburgh, or 50 minutes by train from Galashiels (16 miles), and only 90 minutes' drive from Glasgow.
Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
