The bright and sunny sitting room is always the central gathering point for guests with an electric flame effect fire that keeps it cosy and a handy dining table and chairs that fold neatly away when not in use. You can see Kelso Abbey from the sitting room window and there is also a contemporary kitchen and neat single bedroom (with additional pull out bed) on this level.
Stairs (fairly steep) then lead upstairs where there are is an inviting double bedroom and a further single bedroom that both have slightly coombed ceilings and share a modern shower room.
Outside stairs lead up from a courtyard to the apartment that is set out on the first and second floors of the building. There is parking just down the road in the cobbled town square or in the car park behind the Abbey, both of which are in easy walking distance.
It is barely a minutes’ walk to the famous 12th century Kelso Abbey that stands proudly with much of its original architecture still intact.
It is one of four in the area and the others at Jedburgh (11 miles), Melrose (14.5 miles) and Dryburgh (11 miles) are all easily reachable. The Borders Abbeys Way walking route takes in all four and is just one of the many walks/cycle routes spread out across the region.
The nearby Rennie Bridge that spans the beautiful River Tweed dates all the way back to 1803 when it was designed by the famous civil engineer John Rennie. It is actually a smaller scale version of the Waterloo bridge that was later built in London and when that bridge was finally dismantled, Kelso was gifted with two of the lamps from it that stand at the end of the bridge to this day.
A second bridge, Hunter’s Bridge, was opened in 1998 and there is a lovely circular walk (2 ½ miles long) that takes in both bridges and the Millennium Viewpoint where there is a wonderful expansive view out over the town and River Tweed.
The Tweed is well known for its fishing with salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling being caught there. In fact, the river has more fish ‘caught to the fly’ than any other river in Britain! It is a very picturesque place to fish and there is a particularly good spot at ‘The Junction’ where the River Tweed and River Teviot merge.
There is a small supermarket just a short walk from the apartment and you are well placed for other shops, with a butcher nearby and plenty of shops, bakeries and cafés off the square. Kelso also has a good range of pubs and restaurants to choose from should you fancy going out for lunch or an evening meal.
Every summer each of the towns in the Scottish Borders hold a special week of celebration and if you visit Kelso in mid-July you may well catch some of the festivities during its Civic Week. There is a programme of different events around the town with parades of pipers and traditional dancers and impressive ride outs where hundreds of horse riders ride through the town and head off out into the countryside with spectators cheering them on along the route.
