This charming cottage may look small from the outside but it is deceptive and actually offers very spacious accommodation with plenty of room to spread out into. There is a choice of places to sit and relax: the sitting room with its toasty open fire or the inviting sunroom with its wood-burning stove, further comfy seating and doors leading out to the pretty garden. As there is a TV in both rooms all viewing tastes can be catered for and there are dining areas in both the sunroom and kitchen.
The well-equipped kitchen is light and bright and off it is a handy utility area and modern wet room. There is also an attractive double bedroom with a decorative fireplace on this level.
A winding spiral staircase leads from the sitting room upstairs to the family bathroom and twin bedroom that has coombed ceilings and roof windows. In between the two rooms a door leads out to a delightful balcony that has been created to make the most of the lovely view out across the garden to the hills beyond. It is a great spot to enjoy an al fresco breakfast whilst listening to the birds singing around you.
There is parking right by the front door and at the rear of the cottage the large, enclosed garden is full of mature plants and trees that give a peaceful, secluded feeling.
Please note: Due to the nature of the cottage’s layout it is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.
The village shop/PO is just round the corner and there is an excellent butcher just a few doors further along the road. A 5 minute stroll in the other direction takes you to the Templehall Inn that serves excellent meals, with dogs allowed in the bar and a beer garden out the back to make use of in good weather.
The region is known as good ‘walking country’ with lots of hills to climb and quiet roads that are ideal for both walking and cycling. St Cuthbert’s Way is a most picturesque walking route that starts in Melrose (20 miles) and runs all the way over to Holy Island off the east coast. You can join part of the route from Morebattle and head up over Wideopen Hill which, as its name suggests, has wonderful expansive views of the surrounding countryside.
The route then carries on to Kirk Yetholm which is the end point for the Pennine Way. The pub there is a perfect pitstop as they are used to welcoming many walkers that are weary from their travels.
Kelso (8 miles) is the nearest place for stocking up on supermarket supplies and it is very well catered for with shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. It also has a swimming pool, ice rink and horse racing ground. There is an 18 hole golf course on the outskirts of the town or just outside the village of Heiton (6.5 miles) is the famous Roxburghe Golf Course that is set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland by the River Teviot.
If a day of shopping and sightseeing in the city beckons then you can get the train from Tweedbank (21.5 miles) and be up in the centre of Edinburgh in under an hour.
