Just a couple of miles east of Duns and 14 miles west of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the fast A1, the house stands detached in its own large enclosed garden (with furniture), which is a most peaceful place to relax on a sunny afternoon.
It is hard to believe now, given its comfort and charm, that the cottage was originally built in the early 1800s as a barn to house the local Minister's horse and carriage. It has now been completely redesigned and refurbished to create this very attractive, solid stone house.
All the rooms have been furnished to a high standard in terms of both quality and style. The sitting room is furnished in a delightfully cottagey style, with an open fire to keep it cosy. The panelled ceiling, attractive fireplace, beguiling window seat and French doors all add to the charm. The spacious dining kitchen is well-equipped with everything you could need and there is a glazed door from here to the garden.
All on one level, there are two bedrooms. The double room again has large glazed doors to the garden that make the room very light and airy and the twin room is very elegantly presented. A family bathroom with bath and shower over completes the accommodation.
Outside there is a pretty enclosed garden and with access to it from just about every room, The Old Carriage House is an inviting cottage indeed.
At the Old Carriage House you are very well placed for exploring this attractive area of Scotland.
To the west are the Border hills, which offer great walking and mountain biking, as well as a whole list of keeps, castles, stately homes and ruined abbeys to visit. To the east you are within a half hour drive of the coast, the sandy beach at Coldingham and the magnificent cliffs at St Abbs, with their amazing seabird colonies.
To the south, you can drive down into England, visiting Lindisfarne and Holy island, Bamburgh and Alnwick. While to the north, you can explore the coast of Lothian with its superb golf courses, including famous Muirfield, as well as Tantallon Castle and North Berwick, where you can take a boat trip to see more seabirds on the Bass Rock.
Of course a day in Edinburgh is not to be missed. Perhaps the most relaxing way to get there is to leave the car and take the train from Berwick.
