As it is based on the ‘upside down’ principle, the cottage’s main living area is upstairs and the sleeping accommodation is downstairs.
The open plan living area is very spacious and has a light and airy feeling due to its large roof windows. At one end is a comfortable seating area with a TV with built-in TV/movie streaming that you can while away the evenings in front of. At the other end is a modern kitchen area that is well-equipped and even has a dishwasher so you don’t have to worry about whose turn it is to wash up! There is a stylish dining area alongside and also a handy WC on this level.
Downstairs the lovely bright double bedroom is beautifully presented with French doors that open out to a little outdoor seating area. A modern tiled bathroom with bath and shower over completes the accommodation.
Outside there is parking in the gravelled area right by the door that is shared with the owner’s house that is situated opposite. There is also secure storage available for bikes/motorbikes.
With trains running up to Edinburgh from both Galashiels (11 miles) or Tweedbank (11 miles) the capital is easily accessible for a day trip.
The Ian Stark Equestrian Centre (1.75 miles) offers riding lessons and there is an excellent 18-hole golf course on the Woll Estate (3.5 miles) that welcomes visitors.
You can walk straight from the cottage off out into the surrounding countryside, or take advantage of the quiet single track roads and explore by bike. There is also a fishery just down the road where guests can try fly fishing on Clerklands Loch, free of charge (by arrangement).
Selkirk (4 miles) is the nearest town for stocking up on groceries and it is also the home of the famous Selkirk Bannock, a local speciality fruit bread. A few miles out of the town is Bowhill House and Country Estate where you can tour the grand house itself or take a stroll around the attractive grounds and perhaps stop at the tearoom for refreshments.
Melrose (10 miles) is a pretty town with plenty of interesting little independent shops, as well as pubs, restaurants and an excellent delicatessen. Every April the town plays host to the famous Melrose Sevens rugby tournament that draws in visitors from all across the UK and in the summer it hosts the Borders Book Festival that features a host of well known authors. Melrose is also known for its medieval ruined Abbey that is one of four in the area, with the others at Dryburgh (13 miles), Kelso (19 miles) and Jedburgh (13.5 miles).
Kelso is a picturesque market town that is centred around a charming cobbled square with lots of interesting shops and a programme of different events that run at its racecourse and agricultural showground throughout the year. Jedburgh is famous for its Castle Jail and Mary Queen of Scots House, a late 16th century townhouse that has exhibits detailing her fascinating life.
In the other direction Galashiels (11 miles) has a wide range of shops and supermarkets, as well as cafés, restaurants and pubs. You can get the train from either Galashiels or Tweedbank (11 miles) and be up in Edinburgh in under an hour for a day trip spent enjoying the sights and sounds of the bustling capital city.
