Inside the cottage is warm and inviting with a spacious sitting room that has comfortable seating and large French doors that make it bright and cheerful. The kitchen is simple but well-equipped with a little dining area and even a dishwasher so you don’t have to worry about washing up. Also on this level is a modern shower room.
Upstairs is a cosy double bedroom with an ornate metal bedframe and also a neat twin room. Both bedrooms are pleasantly presented with roof windows that give them a light and airy feel. As is common in this type of cottage, the bedrooms both have steeply coombed ceilings and low doorways.
Outside you can drive right up to the cottage to load and unload at the door, with parking down in the village that is accessed via a little pathway.
Gattonside is peaceful and relaxed with two different restaurants to choose from if you fancy some nights off from cooking. A lit pathway takes you from the village down to the River Tweed where there are some lovely walks to be had.
The river is well known for its excellent fishing and is particularly famous for its salmon fishing. There is a beat with a fully-equipped fishing hut just along from the village and day permits can be arranged.
If you walk or cycle across the chain bridge that crosses the river you end up in the town of Melrose (2.6 miles by road). It is a lively little town that has an assortment of small independent shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. It is also home to the famous Melrose Sevens rugby tournament that is held annually in the town, drawing visitors from all over the UK. From Melrose you have easy access to the Eildon hills, a well-known local landmark popular with walkers who are keen to sample and capture the stunning panoramic views that can be seen from the summits of the three hills.
Melrose Abbey is one of four historic Abbeys in the area, with the others sited at Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh. The Border Abbeys Way is a circular walking route that takes in all four. It is nearly 65 miles in total but there are five shorter walks within it if you don’t fancy tackling the whole thing. If you prefer cycling the 4 Abbeys cycle route also allows you to take in all the Abbeys, mainly using quiet back roads.
Galashiels (4 miles) has plenty of shops, supermarkets, cafes, pubs and restaurants. The capital Edinburgh is easily reached in 55 minutes by train from Tweedbank (2 miles). If you prefer to take the car, it is just over an hour’s drive away for a day that can be spent sightseeing or enjoying the many shops, pubs, restaurants, museums and galleries the city has to offer.
Kelso (13 miles) is a pretty market town that has retained its charming cobbled town square. It has several small independent shops as well as supermarkets, a golf course, a swimming pool, a race course and the Tait Hall theatre that has a programme of various concerts and performances throughout the year.
