Edderston CottageGuest Rating
Just 45 minutes from historic Edinburgh lies Peebles, a quiet, picturesque Scottish Borders town that straddles the beautiful River Tweed. Just a short stroll from the town centre (pubs, restaurants and hotels), but situated down a peaceful, leafy street sits Edderston Cottage.

This delightfully quaint detached, stone-built cottage, which was originally used as a gardener's cottage, is set in its own sweet enclosed garden, giving you that 'country cottage' experience, whilst still having easy access to the town.
This pretty cottage has been crafted to suit two people just perfectly. The snug, comfortable living room is bright and attractively furnished, with the seating positioned around the lovely traditional open fire, which is perfect for a relaxed night in after spending some time exploring the area. The kitchen is homely and well-equipped, with a traditional gas Rayburn for cooking and also making the room feel toasty. There is a stylish seating area in the kitchen, as well as a separate bright dining room laid out just for two. Also on the ground floor is the generous bedroom with king size bed and cosy window seat and a contemporary shower room with shower, WC and wash basin.
The upstairs of the cottage has been converted to provide an additional sleek and modern bathroom with a spacious shower and even a luxurious corner bath to soak in after a hard day's sight seeing. Having the two bathrooms really proves to be invaluable if you are both getting ready for an evening out!
Outside, the driveway provides ideal private off road parking for one car and leads straight up to the entrance, so it is very handy for when you arrive with your luggage! There is also on street parking. In addition to the garden and grassed area there is a small paved courtyard (with furniture and chiminea) and a further seating area at the side of the house with access to a charming raised deck area (also with furniture), that is a perfect sun trap during the day and is ideal for relaxing with a drink in the evening. There is also a shed that provides secure storage for bikes, etc.
Nearby Tweed Valley is quite ideal for walking, as is the famous Southern Upland Way. The route is 212 miles in total, but there are several smaller walks within it that are rather more manageable.
The area around Peebles is also an absolute mecca for mountain bikers. Lots of official bike trails have been set up, from forest roads to single tracks and steep downhill sections.
Only a mile away, is Glentress Forest which is widely thought to provide the best mountain biking in the whole of the UK, with green, blue, red and black-graded trails. It also has various walking trails of different lengths and even a Go Ape treetop adventure course for those looking for an adrenalin rush!
Fishing is very popular in the Peebles area. In fact, the town's coat of arms even features three salmon, referring to their annual migration up the River Tweed. You can fish for brown trout and grayling on the River Tweed from April to September and day tickets are available. Golf is also available nearby - the Peebles Golf Club has a beautiful 18-hole course and visitors can book individual rounds or day tickets.
It is well worth taking time to explore the originally market town of Peebles itself, where there is a swimming pool and leisure centre. The Chambers Institution on Chambers Terrace is definitely worth a look. It houses the town's library, as well as the Tweeddale Museum and Gallery which runs a series of exhibitions through the year.
The Institution was gifted to the people of Peebles in 1859 by William Chambers, who was a Scottish publisher who was born in the town. He went on to become one of the founders of the Chambers Harrap publishing house and even had a street (Chambers Street) named after him in Edinburgh, where a statue of him now proudly stands. The bustling capital is easily reachable in under an hour by train from Galashiels (19 miles) or by a regular bus service from Peebles.
