The cosy sitting room, with its electric flame effect stove, at the heart of the cottage is the ideal place to relax after days spent out exploring. The dining kitchen is modern and well-equipped and there is also a double bedroom and handy WC downstairs.
An open staircase leads upstairs to the attractively presented master double bedroom that has a king-size bed and makes use of a spacious bathroom with a bath and shower over.
Outside there is parking in the gravelled area at the top of the drive and once the gate is closed the whole area is enclosed, with a little patio seating area for alfresco dining and a small lawned area for children to play on.
The cottage is surrounded by farmland and you can walk straight out into it or wander down into Creetown, just 10 minutes’ walk away.
Creetown (0.5 miles) has a small grocery shop, a hotel bar/restaurant and two interesting museums. The Creetown Gem Rock Museum houses a fine collection of beautiful gemstones and crystals and the Creetown Heritage Museum tells the story of the town’s mining history. An excellent example of the local granite can be seen in Adamson Square where an impressive stone sphere sculpture sits by the clock tower.
Fishing is available on the River Cree and there are also several stocked lochs nearby, as well as the chance to try sea fishing off the picturesque coastline. The first-rate mountain biking trails at the 7stanes centre at Kirroughtree are only 10 minutes’ drive away. Bikes can be hired there and there are a family friendly range of different colour graded trails and even a black route that is certainly not for the faint hearted!
The Galloway Forest Park is home to a wonderful range of wildlife with tours that allow you to see the majestic red deer in their natural environment. Bird watchers will enjoy visiting the RSPB site at Wood of Cree (11.5 miles) and witnessing the dramatic feeding of the red kites at the feeding station near Laurieston (22.5 miles). The forest park is known for its amazingly dark skies and has been officially designated as a Dark Sky Park that is the ideal place for a spot of stargazing.
The nearest place to stock up on supermarket supplies is Newton Stewart (6 miles) where there are also some interesting little shops, pubs and restaurants.
Adrenaline seekers will love Laggan Outdoor (8 miles) which offers a range of activities with everything from clay pigeon shooting and archery to zip lining, sledging and whizzing about on Segways (once you get the hang of it). You can also have a go at some watersports including kayaking, sailing and windsurfing out on Loch Ken from the Galloway Activity Centre (26.5 miles).
Castle Douglas (25 miles) has a range of different shops, cafés and restaurants. The town has become known over the past few years as Scotland’s Food Town due to its huge number of food retailers including butchers, bakers, delis and chocolatiers.
