Kirkburn Cottage is an ideal little retreat for couples, tucked away down a quiet road and set in lovely secluded grounds, just 7 miles from Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway.

The charming sitting room is very spacious and bright with an original beamed ceiling, authentic gate latch doors and a multi-fuel stove at its heart that makes it really cosy and inviting. From there an archway leads through to a well-equipped kitchen that has plenty of space for cooking or baking. There is also a handy dining area at one end with French doors that lead out to the patio, so you can open them and ‘bring the outdoors in’.
The large double bedroom also has French doors to the patio, as well as a modern, fully-tiled en suite bathroom with an indulgent roll-top bath. There is also a door that leads from the bathroom back through to the sitting room.
Outside there is parking to the side of the property, where a garage houses the laundry facilities and provides useful storage for bikes, etc. The sun trap patio area can be accessed from both the kitchen and the bedroom and there is a delightful seating area with a substantial built-in BBQ.
To the front of the cottage is a tiered, rough grassed garden area with steps that lead down to a little burn (care to be taken with children).
The picturesque town of Moffat (7 miles) has a range of interesting gift shops, as well as a butcher, a baker, a delicatessen and a PO. There are also several cafes, restaurants, takeaways and pubs and you are also fully catered for in terms of a bank, supermarkets and petrol stations.
The Moffat Museum just off the main street is open to the public from April to late September with exhibits that chart the history of the town. It is of particular interest to railway enthusiasts as it has a working model of the old Moffat railway line. On the edge of Moffat is Station Park that is a great spot for relaxed picnics, with an 18-hole putting green and even a lake where you can rent out boats, kayaks or pedalos.
Bicycles can be hired from Moffat CAN Cycle Hire, who not only hire out bikes but can deliver them right to your door and provide advice on numerous cycle routes in the local area.
The Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve (15 miles) is the site of a stunning 200-foot high waterfall where the Tail Burn flows down from Loch Skeen. There is a walking path that takes you uphill by the waterfall and further still to the unspoilt beauty of the loch, where you may well spot the wild mountain goats that wander the area.
This area is a mecca for walkers and climbers with part of the Southern Upland Way passing just outside Moffat at Beattock and leading up to the beautiful St Mary’s Loch (23 miles). The loch, named after the church that used to stand on its’ banks, is the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders from which you can fish for brown trout and pike on the shores or from one of the boats that are available for hire.
Kirkburn Cottage is the ideal base for exploring Dumfries and Galloway and is also well-placed for exploring further afield with the vibrant cultural city of Glasgow (65 miles) reachable in just over an hour and the bustling capital of Edinburgh (60 miles) under two hour’s drive away. Both cities are great day trip destinations with all that you could wish for in terms of shops, restaurants, museums, galleries and theatres, as well as iconic tourist attractions such as Kelvingrove Park and Edinburgh Castle.
