Like many large cities, Edinburgh has spread to encompass what were once quiet, rural villages, some of which, even today, have managed to retain their old world charm.  One of the most attractive of these is the ancient village for Cramond, which sits on the Firth of Forth, leafy, peaceful and full of atmosphere.  So ancient is the settlement here, that quite recently a Roman artefact was even found just in the harbour.

Cramond is where the River Almond flows into the Firth. On the banks of the river, in a quiet lane which leads only to some picturesque riverside walks, sits Dowies Mill, an old stone mid terrace cottage (circa 1690).  This is divided  into two parts.

The upper of these has just been completely renovated, and is now a superb base for those who either wish to visit Edinburgh itself (buses to the city centre pass the end of the road) or explore the country round about.  (You can be at the Forth Bridge in about 10 minutes and off on the motorway to Fife, the Highlands, or Stirling and the Trossachs.)

The apartment is bright and spacious and on two levels.  On the first floor is a large living room overlooking the river, with wood burning stove and three stairs up to an elegant kitchen.  A turning staircase takes you up to a double bedroom, again with river views and with en suite bathroom.  There is plenty of Wow! Factor throughout.

Within a short walk of the cottage, downstream is the waterfront with pub and bistro.  Two minutes upstream is a historic bridge and another pub.  It really is a most delightful location.  There is parking at the door and a small garden area on the hill behind the house.

If you don't want to spend every day in the city or touring, there are golf courses, swimming pools and other attractions close by.  A few minutes' drive will have you on the Queensferry Road, across the Forth Birdge, and on the motorway heading north or west to Fife, Perthshire, the Highlands, Stirling and the Trossachs, all of which are easily accessible for an enjoyable day trip.

Heating is by gas central heating and multi-fuel stove.  The first £15 of gas and electricity  are INCLUDED.  Bed linen and towels may be hired.  Up to two well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.  Smoking is not permitted in the apartment.

Special rates will apply for Festival and New Year periods.
