We have found another exquisite and romantic holiday hideaway just for you - Devonside Bothy ! Not only that, this sweet little detached house has managed at once to combine the prettiest and most peaceful of settings, ( wonderfully expansive views from all its windows), with a remarkably central location, being about 5 miles from Lanark and ideal for Glasgow, Edinburgh, central Scotland and the Borders.
From the outside, it has a delightfully chocolate box appearance - one of these small, select and very expensive chocolate boxes. But its appearance is deceptive, and the hillside has been used to provide accommodation on three levels, which, inside, gives it a surprising amount of space. On the entrance floor are the hall and bathroom. A few steps go down to the bright and comfortable living area with wood burner, and steps go up to a galleried double bedroom. The cottage is very well insulated and is snug all year round.
Outside, there are two patio areas carefully screened from the owner's house, which is the only other dwelling nearby. (She is a keen organic gardener and vegetables may be available for tenants to purchase from time to time.) There is parking right at the door.
The surrounding countryside is dominated by Tinto Hill, which makes a very pleasant walk. There is further excellent walking on the Carmichael Estate, round the Forth-Clyde Canal, along the Antonine wall, and Douglas Castle, to name but a few possibilities, while the Pentland Hills are within an hour's drive. For fishermen, Tinto trout fishery is just down the road and there is riding at Lanark. The cottage is between Lanark and Biggar, both of which are very attractive old market towns with excellent facilities. There is a good train service from Lanark to Glasgow, so a visit to the city does not mean taking the car. The same holds true for Edinburgh, with trains available from West Calder.
Something which most certainly should not be missed while staying at Devonside Bothy is the World Heritage Site at New Lanark, Robert Owen's model village on the banks of the Clyde. It is just at the Falls of Clyde, so a tour of the Village can be combined with a lovely walk beside the tumbling river.
Bed linen, towels, electricity and from autumn to spring 4 hours of oil heating are INCLUDED in the rental. Sorry, pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted in the cottage. Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.
