It has a specially vibrant harbour front with excellent restaurants, not to mention the former Royal Yacht Britannia as its own leading tourist attraction. Overlooking the old working harbour just a few yards further along is a smart development of new apartments and one of these is the Trade Winds Apartment. This chic, second floor pied a terre provides an ideal base for a memorable visit to Edinburgh.
There is unlimited free parking at the main door (a great boon in non-car-friendly Edinburgh) and a lift to whisk you upstairs. Inside, the apartment is beautifully presented and very easy to live in, with everything to hand. The sitting room is bright and comfortable and overlooks the harbour, which can also be enjoyed from the spacious balcony (with furniture). It has been furnished with comfy sofas and a cleverly chosen dining suite with chairs that tuck in neatly when not in use.
The kitchen is stylish, modern and very well-equipped, with a black and white colour scheme. There is also access to the balcony from here, which on a warm day could double as an al fresco dining area.
All on one level there are two double bedrooms, both of which are very chic, with carefully coordinating soft furnishings and mirrored wardrobes. With one bedroom having an en suite shower room and there being an additional bathroom, the occupants of each bedroom effectively have their own private facilities.
If you find you have over indulged in the many superb eating places in the Leith area, there is also an on-site gym to which guests have access to.
The 22 bus service leaves from the wharf and will take you up to Princes Street in just a few minutes, although it is also perfectly feasible to walk it, if you feel like some exercise.
Within walking distance, too, are a swimming pool, lots of lovely restaurants, a good small shop and the Ocean Terminal shopping complex with an outsize supermarket just beyond it. If you feel like a more tranquil and scenic stroll, there are lovely walks along the Canal and the Water of Leith.
Edinburgh, with its Castle, Royal Mile and great shopping surely needs no introduction as a place to visit. It is famous not just for its sights, but for its rich cultural life and, at Trade Winds, you are at the right end of town to enjoy a great deal of it.
The Playhouse Theatre is at the top of Leith Walk, while the Portrait Gallery (worth a visit for the amazing atrium alone) is at that end of Queen Street. Then of course there is the Palace of Holyrood and the Scottish Parliament, another architectural marvel. Take a walk up Arthur’s Seat, the hill that dominates the city, visit the Museum of Scotland or take a ghost tour through Mary King’s Close.
Edinburgh really does have something for everyone and at the Trade Winds Apartment you are within easy reach of all its attractions and have a peaceful and beautifully presented 'home from home' to return to at the end of the day.
