White Cottage is situated on a quiet back road 6 miles south of Peebles (hotels/shops/most facilities) just 100 yards from the River Tweed (fishing permits available). It is a very old traditional cottage with 2ft thick walls, which has been extensively modernised inside and extended at the rear whilst retaining the original simple frontage.
It has an enviable position, standing in its own grass garden (garden furniture) backing onto the Cardrona Forest, and facing out through trees, across the river to the valley of the Tweed and the hills beyond. The new Cardrona Golf course is approx. half a mile away and welcomes visitors.
For those of a sporting bent, however, one of its greatest attractions will be its proximity to Glentress, the world-class mountain biking centre with its miles of dedicated forest trails of all levels of difficulty. At White Cottage you are within easy cycling distance - no need even to get the car out! Those with an interest in wildlife. can visit the Osprey watching facilities, also at the centre. And if you tire of Glentress, the Seven Stanes Cycle Trail is almost equally close at Innerleithen.
Near to Traquair, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, White Cottage appears on a map dated 1755, and is reckoned to have been the ford-keeper's cottage in the olden days when cattle were driven across the Tweed to Peebles and to Edinburgh ,which is now only 40 minutes drive away.
It makes a comfortable and spacious house in an ideal location for visiting not only all the lovely Border country and much of Dumfriesshire, but also, via the Edinburgh by-pass or the Erskine Bridge, some of Perthshire and Loch Lomondside.
Heating by night-storage heaters, wood-burning stove and electricity. Bed-linen and towels can be hired. Payphone.
