In a charmingly peaceful and rural situation in the heart of the Scottish Borders, some 4 miles from Selkirk, Newhouse Cottage is a most attractive, spacious and comfortable traditional holiday home, full of character and recently refurbished by the owners to a high standard.  Dating from the 1830s, but now beautifully modernised, it has a large parking area to the front and an enclosed garden (furniture).  Inside, there is an ingenious and well fitted galley kitchen, with a few steps down to a spacious living room, which has a wood burning stove.  The windows on three sides of the room mean that it is bright and sunny all day long.  Two bedrooms (one with king-size bed) and a bathroom complete the accommodation.

There are lovely walks to be enjoyed straight from the door in the surrounding countryside.  Here, you are also in the very centre of the lovely Border Country, where there is far more to see and do than could possibly be achieved in the duration of the average holiday.   There is riding, and an excellent golf course (one of many in the area), just about three miles away at Ashkirk.  The Southern Upland Way can be joined just north of Selkirk, while the world-class mountain biking centre at Glentress is within a half-hour drive.  Selkirk also has a swimming pool and there is a leisure centre 10 miles away at Hawick.  The Border towns are full of charm and character, most have excellent eating places, and interesting shops.  Be sure to visit some of the local mill shops, for this area is the home of good knitwear and cashmere in particular.

Then there are all the castles, keeps, ruined abbeys and stately homes in the local area, including Sir Walter Scott's own house at Abbotsford.  In just over an hour you can either be at the coast, or in the centre of Edinburgh (buses run regularly to the capital from Selkirk, if the driver in the party feels like a day off.)

There is the possibility of baby-sitting facilities from two trained nurses, if a romantic dinner at one of the excellent restaurants in the area appeals.

Heating is by electricity and wood burner.  The first £15 of electricity is INCLUDED in the rental.  Bed linen and towels are available for hire.  Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.  Sorry, no smoking within the cottage.  Wireless Broadband is available (subject to provider, charge).

A wonderful week here. EASILY THE BEST holiday cottage we've discovered. Beautiful, tranquil countryside and so conveniently located. Thank you Mary for recommending lovely places to eat, off the beaten track.

An excellent and lovely place to stay in the middle of nowhere yet in the centre of so much of interest and beauty. Lovely and friendly towns and river valleys. Particularly liked the diverse and eclectic library in the cottage, and outside, the hidden garden. And the helpful and attentive landlady.

One of the cosiest, cleanest, quietest cottages we have stayed in. Very well equipped for its size, didn't need anything extra. You have thought of it all. Love the Borders. Thank you for leaving us a welcome pack, much appreciated.

Delightful cottage in idyllic surroundings. So well equipped and so beautifully decorated. The walks have been the highlight of the holiday - the woods and the 'magic garden' in particular - the waterfall is quite breathtaking. Mary's help and advice has been most welcome - thanks.

A lovely cottage in a really beautiful setting. Ideal to lose all the stresses which we gain by working and living closer to towns. Had a lovely holiday. Mrs Sherwood is a very kindly lady, helpful but yet not intrusive. A perfect balance, thanks.

Great home from home. Very peaceful. Just what I needed. Thanks.
