When you come over the Border from England on the A7 at Carter Bar, the whole world seems to be spread at your feet, with glorious views for miles to the legendary Eildon Hills and beyond.  The first place you come to as you travel north on this scenic road is the historic town of Jedburgh, with its picturesque ruined abbey, haunted jail and Mary Queen of Scots' House.

In a commanding position on a hill overlooking the town and the abbey is Skylark Cottage, one of a small terrace of attractive cottages, contemporary, comfortable and cosy, which makes a splendid base for exploring this beautiful area.

To the front there is a decked terrace with furniture to take in the views, while inside, the well-appointed and furnished living area is open plan, with two bedrooms and bathroom upstairs.

It is a short walk down into the middle of the town, where there is an excellent range of shops and eating places.  If the driver needs a holiday too, you can take a bus up to Edinburgh  in about and hour and a half.  To the northeast, historic Berwick Upon Tweed is 34 miles away, or you can explore the sandy Northumberland Coast and visit Lindisfarne (45m).

There is much of interest too in the immediate area. Jedburgh has a swimming pool and golf course, with further excellent courses at Minto and Kelso.  A trip to the Teviot Water Gardens and Smokery at Eckford on the way to Kelso for a day at the races, is a pleasant excursion, perhaps combined with lunch, while families will enjoy at day out at the Jedforest Deer and Farm Park  at Camptown (7m).  There are lots of stately homes to visit, Manderston, Mellerstain, Thirlestane, Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford and Ferniehurst Castle just outside the town.  The area also has a number of historic abbeys such as Dryburgh & Melrose and Jedburgh.  Walking in the Cheviots or along St Cuthbert's Way which runs from Melrose to Lindisfarne is a popular pastime hereabouts as are fishing and riding.

Heating is by electric night store heaters (£15 electricity INCLUDED).  Bed linen and towels may be hired.  Sorry, no pets or smoking within the cottage.  Please note that there are steps down to the cottage from the parking area so it is not really suitable for those of limited mobility.
