Overview

When we say that Mallard Cottage is situated right on the water, we do not exaggerate for the decking area in front of it extends right to within a few feet of the shoreline! It is stunningly located then and scarcely less stunning inside.

It is immediately apparent that the owners are old hands at providing exactly what guests want from a holiday cottage and Mallard is most comfortably furnished and thoughtfully equipped. The clever layout of the interior means that, almost wherever you are in the house, you cannot be unaware of the glorious surroundings.

The ground floor is largely given over to an extensive open plan, double-height living area, with one wall made completely of glass with doors opening to the decking, providing stunning views out over the water. There is comfortable seating around the multi-fuel stove, making the perfect place to curl up in the evening.

Also on this level are two bedrooms, a double and a single and a shower room.

Stairs lead to a lovely galleried landing looking down on to the sitting room, with the master bedroom and bathroom. It is all very light and airy, furnished to a high standard and designed to make the most of the spectacular situation. A mooring and pontoon may be available if you wish to bring your own boat.

Map & Local

Tayvallich is an enchanting wee place, with shop, inn and cafe. There is a beach just across on the Atlantic side of the isthmus (about 1.25 miles) at Carsaig Bay.

You can also drive down the shores of Loch Sween, perhaps visiting Castle Sween and the Kilmory Knap Chapel on the way. There are lots of pleasant little beaches there too and some exciting caves at the end of the road!

On the way from the cottage to Lochgilphead, you will come to the Crinan Canal and it is well worth spending a lazy day walking or cycling along the banks, watching the yachts pass through the locks on their way to the Atlantic. Even better, there are hostelries at either end for refreshment as you go. There is also a fine beach at Crinan.

From the canal at Cairnbaan, it is but a short drive to historic Kilmartin Glen, where there is a remarkable concentration of Bronze Age and Neolithic remains in the form of standing stones, stone circles, chambered cairns and burial chambers. It is a must-see for anyone with even a passing interest in history.

Continuing on this road towards Oban, you will come to the Arduaine Gardens, or by heading north from Lochgilphead along the shores of Loch Fyne towards Inveraray there are the National Trust Gardens at Crarae. Inveraray itself, picturesque with its frontage of black and white buildings, is also worth a visit. Inveraray Castle, ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll, is open to visitors, as is the historic jail where you can even experience some of the punishments that were once inflicted on inmates – a turn on the treadmill for example!

Further afield, Loch Awe, the west coast and the Mull of Kintyre all make for great days out. There is plenty of good walking to be enjoyed, and fishing too. This really is just the place for the most relaxing and enjoyable of holidays.

Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. The first £25 of electricity INCLUDED with any additional usage payable by meter reading at the end of your stay. Heating is by electric underfloor heating and multi-fuel stove (starter pack INCLUDED). WiFi is INCLUDED (subject to a fair usage policy). A mobile signal is also available in Tayvallich, but this is currently limited to a Vodafone only. A maximum of 2 dogs are welcome at an additional charge (2 large, 2 medium or 2 small). If you wish to bring any other pets please contact us and we will see what we can do. No smoking.
