A short walk from the sea, and surrounded by some of the loveliest countryside on the beautiful west coast of Scotland, yet just two hours' drive from Glasgow, and with two world-class restaurants within walking distance - maybe it sounds too good to be true. Well, it's not. For that is precisely what's on offer at Lismore Cottage!
The cottage stands, detached, in its own grass garden, in a quiet corner of the historic little village of Port Appin, about midway between Oban (24 miles) and Fort William (28 miles). It is recently built and has been appointed and furnished to the highest standards. It is owned by a family who love coming here for their own holidays and you can readily understand why. In terms of the amount of space and the way it is organised it is perfectly suited to comfortable family living.
The enormous living area with its hardwood flooring, wood-burning stove and any amount of comfortable seating has French doors leading out to the decking area, so children can run in and out as they please.
The state-of-the-art kitchen is through an arch and round the corner – it has plenty of space and is well tucked out of the way. The additional utility room and the large hallway are very useful for additional storage.
There are four large bedrooms (one en suite) and the whole house is spacious, airy and bright. The downstairs double bedroom also has doors to the decking area and there is a shower room on this level as well.
The other three large bedrooms, a double and two twins, are all upstairs and the double has an en suite. Both of the twin rooms have velux windows which make them particularly bright and attractive. With another family shower room, in terms of comfortable and attractive accommodation Lismore really does have it nailed!
Lismore Cottage is perfectly situated for island hopping, walking and climbing - Glen Coe (18 miles) is less than half an hour's drive away.
It is also well placed for sailing, sea kayaking, riding (there's a riding stables just 5 miles away where you can canter across the sands at low tide) or just relaxing in peaceful and picturesque surroundings.
From the pier at Port Appin you can take the little foot ferry across to the island of Lismore, after which the cottage is named. Lismore, which is ten miles long and a mile wide, is reasonably flat and has one quiet road which runs its length, so it is ideal for cycling. The ferry also carries cycles free of charge, so you have all the ingredients for an active and relaxing family day out. There is even a conveniently placed and excellent Heritage Centre along the road for refreshments.
Port Appin is home to Aird's Hotel, which over the years has graduated from an unpretentious wee country inn to the much-praised and award-winning eating place it is today. For seafood, there is the Pierhouse Restaurant down at the pier. Both of these are within a couple of minutes' walk of the cottage, so you can dine out in style and stroll home without any thought of breathalysers! The village also has a PO/general store and craft shop.
Further afield, from Fort William you can continue up to Loch Ness or west on the Road to the Isles to Arisaig and Morar, both of which make excellent day trips from the cottage. From Oban, there are numerous boat trips to the offshore islands, including Staffa and Iona.
