Overview

Perched 500 feet above the Sound, Achleanan Farmhouse enjoys stunning views across to the mountains of Mull and out to the Atlantic beyond. The house is surrounded by pasture and moorland, which is home to Scottish Blackface sheep, Luing and Highland cattle, and roe and red deer. The farm was once a producer of flax for linen, with the old stone flax tank still standing behind the house.

The house has been refurbished to a high standard, whilst retaining its traditional stone built exterior. All the rooms are attractively furnished and pleasingly presented and the accommodation has also been appointed to reflect what guests are most likely to be doing here – walking, beach combing and relaxing.

The spacious, pine-panelled sitting room has a wood-burning stove that is perfect for curling up in front of after a day’s exploring. The kitchen is bright and well-equipped and there is a lovely dining garden room from which you can admire the stunning panoramic sea views. Also on this level are a neat twin bedroom, a shower room and a handy utility room for storing outdoor clothes and boots.

Upstairs are a cosy double bedroom (with king-size bed) and a twin room, both with coombed ceilings, as well as the family bathroom with bath and shower over. Double glazing and central heating ensure that the house is as welcoming in winter as it is in other seasons.

Outside is a pretty enclosed garden (with furniture) where children can play and you can relax and take in the amazing scenery. There is also a games room in an outbuilding to the side of the farmhouse where guests can make use of a table tennis table, dartboard and a selection of exercise equipment. It is the ideal place to while away an afternoon, particularly if the weather is inclement.

Map & Local

Situated in the 7,000 acres of the private Drimnin Estate, Achleanan is a place of great tranquillity, with the nearest habitation half a mile away.

Guests have access to the Estate's eight miles of coastline, its moors, valleys and native woodland and the historic ruins of a Victorian chapel, Stone Age fort and walled crofting village.

Golden and sea eagles, pine martens and otters can all be seen on the Estate. For the active, there are plenty of walks within the Estate - over hills, along the private track to the old ferry inn on Loch Sunart and around the coast.

There is a ferry which plies back and forth every day from Lochaline (11 miles, with hotel and restaurant) over to Fishnish on Mull (no booking necessary). With such easy access, a visit must be high on the to-do list of any guests in this part of the world. The crossing is short (20 minutes) and from Fishnish an excellent road leads north to the capital Tobermory, with its brightly painted houses clustering round the picturesque harbour. From there, you can continue across to the wonderful beach at Calgary.

To the south from Fishnish, a single track road runs right round the southern part of the island to Fionnphort at the end of the Ross of Mull, where you take the little foot ferry over to the magical island of Iona, with its ancient abbey and silver sands. This journey takes just over an hour and runs through some very wild and impressive scenery.

On the other hand, turning north at Lochaline and westwards on rejoining the A861, another most beautiful road takes you through the oakwoods along the north shore of Loch Sunart. It brings you to the Ardnamurchan peninsula, where you can visit the Stevenson lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula or laze on the sands at Sanna. The tip of the peninsula is the most westerly point on the British mainland and is the ideal place to try and spot the dolphins, basking sharks and even the occasional minke whale that are often seen there.
