The winding road along the shores of Loch Sunart on the Ardnamurchan peninsula across the Ardgour ferry near Onich must surely count as one of the most scenic in Scotland.

Birch woods alternate with rugged hillsides, with views of the loch which are sometimes tantalising glimpses and sometimes breathtaking panoramas. This is a wonderful place for a holiday and where better to use as a base to explore this dramatic wilderness than Hayfield Cottage, near Salen?
Lucky visitors now have the opportunity to stay in this immaculate and beautifully presented, detached cottage which is reached by a short drive and stands in its own extensive grass garden just yards from the shore. It has wonderful views across the water to the hills on the other side and with the woods and hills behind.
Inside it has been furnished and equipped to the highest standards. The spacious sitting room has windows on three sides so you don’t miss a moment of the lovely loch views. It is very inviting, with plenty of space for guests to spread out and do their own thing, or come together round the cosy wood-burning stove.
The kitchen is equally spacious and well-equipped, with built-in appliances and a convenient dining area. The utility room is useful not just as a laundry, but also as a convenient store for equipment and outdoor clothing. There is also a double bedroom and an elegant bathroom on this level, meaning that the house is suitable for guests with limited mobility.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, a double and a twin. Both of the bedrooms are large, with windows to front and back affording not only plenty of light but also beautiful views of the loch and woodland. The modern, well-fitted shower room is adjacent to the bedrooms.
Oil central heating and efficient insulation make this a cottage for all seasons and there is even a charming porch (with furniture) for enjoying the views when sitting outside is not such an enticing option.
This dream location is first and foremost a place to chill, but there is no shortage of things to see and do in the area. There are wonderful coastal and hill walks right from the door, while cycling on the quiet roads is another favourite pastime.
Loch Sunart offers opportunities for both fishing and sailing and a slipway is available for those wishing to bring their own craft (at own risk). A mooring can also be pre-booked (additional charge).
Artists will find the changing play of light on the water and hills a constant source of inspiration, while art lovers don't even have to move from the cottage for a spot of culture. The owner's son is a very talented artist with a gallery just along the road. Some of his pictures are in the cottage and are available for purchase.
There is a wonderful range of wildlife to be seen - seals, otters and even the occasional porpoise in the loch, as well as deer and pine martens on the hills and in the woods and buzzards and perhaps even eagles in the skies above.
Nearby Salen stands at the junction where the road either continues west to Ardnamurchan Point, or turns north towards Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. Continue west and you will come first to Kilchoan, from where in summer it is possible to take the ferry across to the Isle of Mull and then to the Stevenson lighthouse (the westernmost point in mainland Britain) and the amazing beach at Sanna. A tiny ferry also makes a tour one day a week from Lagga, again just along the road from the cottage, callling at Tobermory and Drimnin.
Head north and you join the Road to the Isles, with the silver sands of Arisaig and Morar, a wonderful seaside golf course at Traigh (which means simply 'beach') and the chance to take ship for the Isle of Skye from Mallaig.
On wet days (which do occasionally happen in the west of Scotland), Fort William (with all facilities and leisure centres, etc) can be reached in just over an hour. You could take the opportunity to trek up Ben Nevis while you are there. Salen has a hotel and there are shops at both Strontian to the east and Acharacle to the north west.

Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Electricity is INCLUDED. Heating is by oil central heating (first £20 INCLUDED with any additional payable at the end of your stay) and wood burning stove (fuel INCLUDED). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. WiFi is INCLUDED (subject to a fair usage policy). A maximum of 2 dogs are welcome at an additional charge (2 large, 2 medium or 2 small).
