Overview

This traditional cottage takes its name from the curlew, a large wading bird that is just one of many you are likely to spot nearby. Inside, its warm, inviting sitting room has a wood-burning stove set in a traditional stone fireplace at its heart and cosy seating to snuggle up on. The smart kitchen is well-equipped and has a dining area alongside and the modern bathroom with bath and shower over is also on this level.

Upstairs are two attractively presented bedrooms, a double with king size bed and a twin, both of which have roof windows that keep them light and bright. As you would expect in this type of cottage the bedrooms have steeply coombed ceilings and lower than average doors, so taller guests may have to mind their heads.

Outside there is parking in the space just to the side of the cottage. To the rear is a grassed garden area that backs onto the local playground, with the sea beyond it and even a little sandy beach when the tide is out.

The Isle of Raasay is reached by a 25 minute ferry ride from Sconser on the Isle of Skye, arriving into Churchton Bay (1 mile). You can bring take your car across on the ferry, or perhaps even leave it behind for a real break away from it all.

Raasay is off the main tourist trap with a quiet, relaxed pace of life and a climate that is softened by the warming Gulf Stream.

A single track road runs around the island, part of which was hand-built by determined local Calum McLeod and took over 10 years to complete!

It is worth filling up with petrol and stocking up on supermarket supplies on Skye en route, although Inverarish does have a little shop/PO with groceries, newspapers, etc, as well as day or week permits for fresh water trout fishing. There is a restaurant, café and bar in easy walking distance at Raasay House, where they also rent out bikes and offer outdoor activities including canoeing, gorge walking and abseiling.

There are plenty of walks around Raasay’s hilly terrain and the quiet roads are ideal for cycling. There is a lovely walk up to the highest point on the island, Dun Caan, which was formed by the remains of a volcanic plug. It starts at East Suisnish pier and leads up the peak to its distinctive flat-topped summit from which an incredible 360 degree panoramic view can be enjoyed.

‘Raasay’ means isle of the roe or red deer and that is just one of the array of wildlife that can be spotted. Sea, golden and white-tailed eagles are known to grace the skies and dolphins, whales and a colony of seals are often seen in the surrounding waters. Stargazers will enjoy taking advantage of the dark skies and lack of streetlights, particularly towards the north where the aurora borealis, or northern lights, have been spotted.

A day trip back to the Isle of Skye allows you to take advantage of its many facilities including a golf course, swimming pool, pony trekking and boat hire. There are also plenty of opportunities for climbing and munro ‘bagging’ on its Cuillin mountain range.

Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Electricity is INCLUDED. Heating is by electric panel heaters (INCLUDED) and wood-burning stove (fuel INCLUDED). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. A maximum of 2 dogs are welcome at an additional charge (1 large, 1 medium or 2 small). If you wish to bring any other pets please contact us and we will see what we can do. No smoking.
