The Missionary's House
Glendale, Isle of SkyeRead reviews
The Missionary's House is situated on the Duirinish peninsula on the west coast of Skye, about 7 miles from Dunvegan and in the little crofting community of Fasach in Glendale.
It stands in over six acres of its own land high above the road, with wonderful views of the whole Glendale valley and Loch Pooltiel beyond to the Outer Hebrides. In fact you have a ringside seat for those glorious Hebridean sunsets here, they can be enjoyed either from the garden around the house (with furniture) or from the cosy interior.
Inside, the house has been completely refurbished by its new owners and has been equipped and furnished to a very high standard. In addition to the sitting room, with its whitewashed stone wall, stripped wood floors and roaring wood-burning stove, there is a separate dining room with an open fire and a further 'snug', also with wood-burning stove.
Foodies' will be delighted to learn that it is also just a short distance from the world famous Three Chimneys restaurant!
Here, you are on the Duirinish Peninsula, which had the dubious distinction of having been almost completely emptied of its population during the Highland Clearances. Now, however, it is a wonderful place for walkers.
While the Cuillins are a forty minute drive away, Macleod's Tables can be accessed right from the door of the cottage, and, to the south east, the paths along the highest cliff walk in Britain lead to Neist Point. This route also provides excellent opportunities for whale and bird watching.
There are several small museums in the area and the MacCrimmon Piping Heritage Centre is at Borreraig.
With regard to eating out, if you can't manage the Three Chimneys every night, there are several other excellent restaurants (open from Easter) within easy reach. In Glendale, there is a small licensed restaurant, plus a post office and a village store which stocks most food items.
The Coral beaches are about nine miles away and you will probably also want to take in Dunvegan Castle, the biggest tourist attraction in the area. Portree, the 'capital' of Skye, is 25 miles away.
Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
