Scotland is a country of breathtaking lochs and mountains and many of our cottages are situated to take full advantage of such wonderful scenery. This is certainly true of Sunart House, which stands on the shores of Loch Sunart on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, about 3 miles from Strontian, with only the little single track road between it and the water's edge. Its picture windows afford a panoramic view of the changing light on the water and the hills beyond, which can keep you spellbound for hours.
A spacious, modern bungalow, it has been most carefully refurbished and is both comfortable and very well equipped. The sitting room, with its wonderful lochside view, has an open fire, there is a large kitchen-diner and a further utility room. Two twin bedrooms, a double with en suite shower and a further bathroom complete the accommodation. It stands quite alone in its own rough grass garden (furniture) with only the hill behind.
The cottage is on the Laudale Estate, and in winter and early spring you may well see parties of deer ambling along the road in front of the cottage (some even come and investigate the garden!) heading for their winter feeding station in the old fish farm just along the road. This whole area teems with wildlife - keep an eye out for otters, buzzards and even eagles. Fishing can be arranged on the loch. The surrounding mountains afford plenty of opportunity for walking - you can go all day without meeting a soul. And if you come in winter, and ski-ing is your bag, then you have the choice of the Nevis Range, just above Fort William, or Glencoe, both of which may be reached via the Corran Ferry in less than an hour.
For touring, the area offers the magnificent drive along the north shore of the loch and out to Ardnamurchan Point, with it Stevenson lighthouse. The fine beach at Sanna should not be missed. Otherwise, if you continue north past Salen, you can make for the Silver Sands of Morar, and take a day trip from Mallaig over to Skye. For even closer island hopping, continue on the road past the cottage down to Lochaline, from where you can cross to Mull (no booking necessary.) And if you do, be sure to make time to visit the magical island of Iona.
Strontian is a vibrant little community with hotels, shops, petrol, and a very good little bistro café. For major shopping, Fort William has everything you will require. While you are there, you could always pop up Ben Nevis if you are feeling particularly energetic (!), take the Jacobite Steam Railway out to Mallaig, or a boat trip on Loch Linnhe to see the basking seals.
Bed linen, towels, oil CH and electricity are INCLUDED. Up to two well-behaved pets welcome by arrangement. Sorry smoking is not permitted in the cottage. Water is from a private source which is regularly tested. For £10, payable on arrival, tenants have the opportunity to purchase a weekly family pass to the Nevis Leisure Centre in Fort William. The property lets from SUNDAY to SUNDAY.
