The village of Strontian, is situated on the beautiful Ardnamurchan peninsula about 25 miles south west of Fort William and is best accessed by way of the Ardgour Ferry (no booking necessary). It is a delightful little village at the head of Loch Sunart, from which the road (suddenly diminished from the sweeping 2-lane highway from the ferry) meanders west through stunning scenery along the loch to Ardnamurchan Point, the most westerly point of mainland Britain, or south to the Lochaline Ferry (again no booking necessary) to Mull.
You will hopefully be gaining the impression that Strontian is an excellent base for a holiday, and offering accommodation which is no less appealing than the village is Tigh Grianach, which in Gaelic means the Sunny House. This is a most attractive detached bungalow, tucked away among the rhododendrons which bloom so magnificently in this part of the world with the loch visible beyond.
Inside, it is both comfortable and well equipped. The sitting room has a wood burning stove to augment the electric heating, there is a smart, modern dining kitchen, three bedrooms offering every configuration, double, twin and single, and a spacious shower room.
The village has all you need for an enjoyable stay - two excellent general stores/PO, a craft shop, two hotels, a very good little bistro/cafe and possibly the most scenically situated petrol pumps in Scotland . All of these are within a short stroll of the cottage.
People come to this area to enjoy the magnificent scenery, admire the varied wildlife - buzzards, eagles, deer, squirrels, seals, pine martens, to name but a few- revel in the peace and quiet, walk in the surrounding hills, or fish in the loch.
There are also many interesting excursions which can be undertaken. A day on Mull is probably a must, with the jumping-off point at Lochaline just 18 miles from the cottage. On a lovely day, it is equally worthwhile to continue along the coast and up to the glorious sands at Sanna (there's another possible ferry connection along there, a summer crossing from Kilchoan to Tobermory on Mull ). A further alternative is to turn right at Salen, up to Acharacle, and to Kentra Bay or on to the silver sands of Arisaig and Morar and the breathtaking views of Eigg and Rum. There is a fine 18 hole golf course near Arisaig at Traigh. (Traigh just means 'beach' and that says it all the loveliest setting imaginable).
If the weather is not so wonderful and some organised entertainment is called for, Fort William is always on hand for major shopping, a leisure centre, cinema etc. Whilst there, if feeling particularly energetic , you may wish to climb Ben Nevis or, or take advantage of the world-class mountain biking trails at Aonach Mor, where you can take advantage of a gondola to get you up the mountain. For something more leisurely, Fort William offers plenty of boat trips too, to view the basking seals in Loch Linnhe.
Heating is by electricity (INCLUDED) and wood burning stove. Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Sorry, pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
