Turn off the main road to Skye at Shiel Bridge, climb over Mam Ratagan and you will come down into the little village of Glenelg, on the shores of the Sound of Sleat, with glorious views across to Skye.
It is a charming little village, hardly more than a hamlet, yet with a general store and excellent inn, and it is here that you will find Halfcroft Cottage, an excellent whitewashed, traditional cottage now newly and most stylishly refurbished and offered for holiday accommodation.
Inside its thick walls, you will find a cosy sitting room with open fire to complement the oil-CH, a state of the art kitchen with both Esse and conventional electric cooker, an elegant bathroom, and, upstairs, twin and double bedrooms. There is a small garden at the back with decking area where guests can relax with a book or an evening drink.
The road through Glenelg peters out down the coast at Corran, so there is little in the way of passing traffic. However in the summer a little turntable ferry operates between Glenelg and Kylerhea on Skye, so there is no need to wend your way back to the main road if you want to spend a day on the island. On the far side, the little road that winds down to Kylerhea (where there is a notable otter hide) from Broadford is quite spectacular, and the journey is well worth making for the views alone.
Skye itself needs little introduction as a holiday destination, and offers magnificent walking and climbing, especially in the famous Cuillins. The Sleat peninsula, the nearest part to Glenelg, is also known as the Garden of Skye. Armadale Castle and Gardens should not be missed, from Armadale too you can take the ferry to Mallaig and visit the silver sands of Morar and Arisaig. And then there are the gastronomic delights of Lady Claire Macdonald's Kinloch House or the Eilean Iarmain Hotel.
However the mainland too offers many delights for the visitor. Here, too, there is excellent walking, while once back at Shiel Bridge and on the main road to Skye, you will pass the famous Eilean Donan Castle, perhaps one of the best known monuments in Scotland. Beyond Kyle, you can explore lovely Plockton, with its palm trees along the bay and excellent eating places, or drive on to Lochcarron, Shieldaig and the glorious mountains of Torridon.
Oil-CH, bed linen, towels and electricity are all INCLUDED in the rental. Sorry pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted within the property.
