Tigh na Drochit means The House at the Bridge, which perfectly sums up the position of this superb new property. It stands, detached, beside the bridge over the river on the Eilean Reach Estate at Glenelg on the west coast of Scotland, just a short distance from the Sound of Sleat and with magnificent views across this to the mountains of Skye beyond.
Built on the site of an old cottage, no effort has been spared in creating a most comfortable cottage with all modern conveniences. The spacious living area has a log burner to supplement the oil central heating; there is a well-fitted kitchen and utility room, three bedrooms, one en-suite, and a family bathroom. In short, a perfect and convenient base for a wonderful holiday in magnificent surroundings.
Glenelg is reached from the road to Skye at Shiel Bridge, over the dramatic Mam Ratagan. It is a charming wee village on the waterside, which has an excellent shop and a renowned inn serving superb food, both of which are within walking distance of Tigh na Drochit. Through the village to the north, you will come to the ruin of the Bernera barracks, built when the Hanoverians were subduing the Highlands after Culloden, then on to the little turntable car ferry, a community run service which plies in summer between Glenelg and Kylerhea on Skye. This is a trip well worth making, perhaps best experienced in the Kylerhea- Glenelg direction, for the road on Skye down to the ferry is truly breathtaking. There is also an otter hide at Kylerhea for these graceful creatures can often be spotted in the Sound.
The little road past the cottage comes to an end at Corran after a scenic route along the Sound, but there is a branch which leads inland from the Bridge which takes you to the magnificent Pictish brochs on the way to Balvraid. (There are more Pictish ruins over the hill near Letterfearn which makes another great walk.)
There is scope too for mountain biking or road cycling, and riding stables over the hill at Shiel Bridge. Skye, with all its attractions, can be reached via the Skye Bridge in less than an hour, passing the iconic Eilean Donan Castle on the way. Climbers and walkers can tackle either the Cuillins on Skye or the Five Sisters of Kintail which dominate Glen Shiel to the south.
First £25 of oil-CH, electricity and bed-linen INCLUDED. Towels are available for hire. Sorry, no pets or smoking is permitted in the cottage. Wi-Fi INCLUDED, subject to provider.
