Arran is one of the most popular and most easily accessible of Scotland's islands. It is also one of the most attractive, offering good walking, good beaches, good golf and a host of other activities in a very compact and beautiful area.
There, just two miles from the ferry terminal at Brodick (shops, hotels, all facilities), the 'capital' of the island, Gran's Cottage is a traditional little whitewashed stone cottage which sits in its own large and secluded garden on the threshold of magnificent Glen Rosa. It dates from around 1750, but its original inhabitants would scarcely recognise it now, so beautifully has it been renovated and refurbished to offer everything in the way of 21st century comfort.
The kitchen is magnificently equipped, down to a cappuccino machine and a bread maker; it also has a seating area from where you can watch the abundant wildlife which frequents the garden. The sitting room is cosy and comfortable with oak flooring. The bathroom boasts a Jacuzzi bath, where you can soothe away the strains of an over-energetic day. Upstairs there are two quaint, pine-clad double bedrooms (with sloping ceilings, so taller guests may need to exercise caution). The whole cottage is full of thoughtful little touches provided by the owners to ensure that your stay here is a truly unforgettable one.
From the door, you can set off on foot up the lovely Glen, (where you may be lucky enough to spot a golden eagle), accept the challenge of Goat Fell, the highest point on the island which dominates the whole landscape, or just have a quiet stroll through the policies of nearby Brodick Castle.
There are many excellent golf courses on the island, a couple of swimming pools at local hotels which are open to visitors, pony trekking, paragliding or quad biking, so those with plenty of energy are very well provided for. For those, on the other hand, who simply want to relax and recharge their batteries, you could hardly imagine a more peaceful and lovely spot to do just that.
The island is reached by car ferry from Ardrossan - see the Calmac timetable on the internet or phone 01294 463470.
