If you drive up the lovely island of Skye towards Portree and take the Dunvegan road when you come to Sligachan, then left again along the south shore of Loch Harport, (passing the Talisker Distillery on the way!) you will come to Glendale Cottage at Portnalong.

The owners, who live across the drive, have substantially upgraded this compact but most attractive cottage, with double glazing, new heating, furnishings and fittings, to ensure that it will provide snug and comfortable accommodation at all seasons of the year. Outside, there is ample parking, and a seating area with furniture and barbecue and with views over the loch, while from the other side of the cottage you look away to the Cuillins to the south. There is also secure lockable storage for bikes etc.

Here, you are just about in the centre of the island so that you can visit all the different peninsulae of Skye very easily, yet, if you do not want to move far afield, you are in an attractive crofting area which has pleasant moorland and coastal walks. If you are looking for something more challenging, but without going to the extremes of the Cuillins, the interestingly shaped, flat-topped hills known as MacLeod's Tables are further to the north west via the Dunvegan road. There is a small sandy beach at Fiscavaig (1.5m), watersports, fishing and a slipway for launching boats onto Loch Harport a half-mile away. The access road for The Cuillins and Glen Brittle just nearby.

There is a popular pub and restaurant on the road along the loch at Carbost, and tours and tastings at that afore-mentioned distillery.

Heating is by electricity (£10 INCLUDED). Bed-linen and towels are INCLUDED. Two small or one larger pets are welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking in the cottage.

A lovely stay in a perfect cottage. The views of the loch and watching the birds in the garden were a joy. We loved the scenery, Coral Beach, Dunvegan Castle, Loch Coruisk and the boat ride from Elgol. Would recommend the Stein Inn and the Lower Deck at Portree. Wonderful fish. Many thanks to Ann and Jim for their personal welcome on our arrival.

We felt privileged to be Ann and Jim's first guests at this well equipped and cosy cottage which proved to be a perfect base for exploring beautiful Skye.

Fantastic cottage in a stunning area. Glendale Cottage provided us with all the home comforts for a superb holiday. Ann and Jim are excellent hosts who made us feel most welcome. We would highly recommend the Three Chimneys Restaurant, and on a sunny day the Coral Beaches at Dunvegan are spectacular.

Great week in a lovely cottage with a warm welcome from Ann and Jim. Ann gave us great advice on walks etc. Loved watching birds at bird feeders in garden, especially a wren and baby.

Jane & Clive, Lancashire 22/05/2010

A very warm welcome from two lovely hosts, Ann and Jim. Cottage was beautiful, a real home from home. For the most part the weather has been at its best. We've seen lots of wildlife including seals, eagles, buzzards, puffins, although the otter remains elusive!! Many thanks for a relaxing stay, will hope to be back soon. Thank you.

Isabele and Denis, From France 31/07/2010

Very well equipped and decorated cottage. Stunning welcome. Well situated to visit the Island. Pleasant walks nearby. Good food at the Old Inn in Carbost, a little busy around 7p.m. it doesn't take long to realise that the place is unique. Thank you!

Georg and Dorte, From Germany 07/08/2010

We have had a great week at Portnalong with nice walks. The Isle Of Skye is a wonderful place for watching and feeling the composition of clouds, sun, sea and mountains. Glendale Cottage is a very nice place to stay.

Paul and Jane, From Cheshire 04/09/2010

A very well equipped and cosy cottage and extremely pleasant and helpful hosts. we have had a fantastic week walking our socks off. The 'secret beach' is stunning, ask Ann and Jim for directions -not easily found. If you do only one trip make it the boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk, simply stunning. Thank you Ann and Jim.

Turner party, Worcestershire 04/04/2011

This was just what we all needed. Thank you Ann & Jim for the use of your lovely cottage. Weather wet and windy but we got out to Talisker Bay and the Coral Beaches at Dunvegan. The food at the Old Inn is very good if you don't fancy travelling too far. The Isle Of Mists has captivated us again.

Hodges party, Bristol 30/04/2011

Wonderful holiday. We loved every minute. Skye is a beautiful island to explore, there is so much to see. The cottage is fantastic - you've worked hard Ann and Jim, to make it so. Thank you so much.

Mehler/Hunt party, East Anglia 21/05/2011

Despite a really wet week we made the most of it with a forest walk (from Ann and Jim's collection of walks) where we saw 5 Eagles - Fantastic! Mark climbed Sgurr Alisdair - a long desired goal which was great. No midges either which is a real bonus. Thank you Ann and Jim for a lovely cottage with great views and facilities. Thanks.

Jensen/Bolscher party, Holland 23/07/2011
