The mountains of Torridon in the north west of Scotland are one of the great meccas for climbers in the UK. But the unrivalled combination of hills and coastline, the dramatic views, the peace and tranquillity, all combine to make this part of the world a wonderful holiday destination also for families and those who may not feel a pressing need to scale every local height!
If the area is one of unrivalled natural beauty, then the setting of Glen Lean Cottage, about 60 miles west of Inverness, is equally stunning, right on the shores of Loch Torridon with fabulous views across to the mountains of the Applecross peninsula. It is detached, in its own one-third of an acre of garden (furniture), a trim, modern house in traditional style, beautifully presented and with every comfort.
It has been known to rain occasionally in that part of the world (!), but there is a most comfortable conservatory to the front, so that guests can watch the changing moods of the loch and mountains even in less clement weather, before repairing to the cosy sitting room when darkness falls. There is also a large, very well appointed dining kitchen, a double and a twin bedroom and bathroom with bath/shower. All you need, then for a perfect holiday, truly 'away from it all'. There is also secure storage for bikes etc.
Wildlife enthusiasts will revel in the range of fauna which can be seen here: red and roe deer, porpoises, otters, buzzards, golden eagles are regular visitors, while if you are very lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of pine martens, wild cats, sea eagles and red kites.
Here, you are within easy reach of many more of the attractions of the Western Highlands. The Skye bridge is only an hour's drive away, as are the tropical gardens at Poolewe. If you take the amazing road up to Diabaig (have your camera at the ready) you can then walk round the coast to Red Point, at the end of the road from Badachro. Take a trip up to Gairloch (shops, hotels etc), or take the wee winding road right round the Applecross peninsula, which in one direction will take you over the famous Pass of the Cattle. There is so much that you could do, though many will find that simply relaxing in the lovely surroundings of Glen Lean Cottage, where fly fishing is also available locally, is more than satisfying.
Heating is by Total Control electricity ( by meter reading). Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. One well behave pet is welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted within the house. There is a telephone (payphone) for outgoing calls only.
