Rothesay's tourist office is opposite the pier at 15 Victoria St (July & Aug Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat 10am-7pm, Sun 10am-5pm; May, June & Sept Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5pm; April & Oct Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm, Sat & Sun 9.30am-5pm; Nov-March Mon-Thurs 9am-5.30pm, Fri 9am-5pm; tel 01700/502151). There's no shortage of modest places to stay along the seafront, but one of the most attractive is Cannon House (tel 01700/502819; £70-90), a Georgian house close to the pier on Battery Place. Another excellent option, a mile to the north in Ardbeg, is Ardmory House (tel 01700/502346, ardmory.house.hotel@dial.pipex.com; £70-90), which is also one of the area's best places to eat. Further out, one mile north of Mount Stuart, New Farm (tel 01700/831646; £40-50) has a few rooms in a lovely converted farmhouse, above a moderately expensive restaurant. The best food options in Rothesay itself are Oliver's, on Victoria Street, or fish and chips at the West End Café on Gallowgate. The Harbour Café on the seafront combines coffee, cakes and internet surfing. Rothesay's cinema is in the Winter Gardens. Bute holds its own Highland Games on the second-to-last weekend in August - Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay, occasionally attends.
