Central Fife

-> Scotland -> Fife -> Central Fife

Central Fife is bisected by the busy A92 from the Forth Road Bridge to the Tay Road Bridge and Dundee.  The only attraction near the 'new' town of Glenrothes is the 14th century keep, chapel and courtyard at Balgonie Castle which is inhabited by the Laird of Balgonie but is open to the public.  Falkland is an old village of 17th and 18th century houses built around the magnificent 16th century Falkland Palace with its fine examples of Early Renaissance architecture, a Flemish tapestry gallery, restored King's Bedchamber and the oldest Real (Royal) tennis court in Britain constructed in 1539 for James V of Scotland.  The best hotels in Falkland which both have good restaurants are the Covenanter Hotel, an 18th century coaching inn, and the Hunting Lodge Hotel.  The Greenhouse restaurant serves organic food.

Cupar is a busy market town and nearby is the Hill of Tarvit Edwardian mansion with fine furniture and paintings and the 16th century Scotstarvit Tower.  Popular with children, the Scottish Deer Centre 3 miles from Cupar on the A91 is a breeding centre for various species of deer and reindeer.  Kids also enjoy battling their wits in the maize maze at Cairnie Fruit Farm north of Cupar.  There are many hotels in Cupar and one of the best restaurants is Ostler's Close.  The Fife Folk Museum occupying a 17th century weigh-house in Ceres, has an interesting collection of old agricultural equipment and a heritage trail.
