Fife's south coast curves sharply north at the mouth of the Forth, exposing the towns and villages to an icy east wind that somewhat undermines the sunshine image of their beaches. For a pleasant, but time-consuming alternative route to St Andrews, you can head east along the A921 after crossing the Forth Road Bridge, following the train line as it clings to the northern shore of the mouth of the Forth. Here you'll find a straggle of Fife fishing communities which have depended on the sea for centuries, and now make popular, although not especially attractive, holiday spots. The train line from Inverkeithing and twice-hourly buses #7 and #7a from Dunfermline run along this coast, stopping at all towns. The most interesting route is the Fife Coastal Path, a waymarked walking trail which picks its way for over fifty miles along the coast all the way from North Queensferry to Crail.
